My 5 yr old red lab was just diagnosed with MCT yesterday. It is about the size and shape of a pecan. Vet says its on his prepuce (groin). He had an ultrasound, X-ray, and blood work to stage him. All came back clean. He is having radical surgery on Monday to completely remove the tumor and surrounding tissue. The vet says due to its location that its probably a higher grade tumor, although I find that hard to b believe because all other tests came back negative. It has not changed in size or color. its not on top of his skin. its in his subcutaneous layer. Not granulated. we will not get biopsy results back until after surgery, I would like some hope for him. Does anyone have experience with a MCT in this region? I am so worried about him. Any information helps! Thank you very much.

Hi @kcecil Hi So sorry to hear that you are going through this too. Are you in the Uk?There is so much information to take in it can be overwhelming. If you search my posts I joined last year to see if anyone else had experience. Fortunately it was very limited. Toby had a Grade 3 Mitotic 9/10 on his ear. His ear was removed and he had 8 rounds of Vinblastine(chemo)He was then staged last Sep to check for spread and we go back on Tuesday for more of the same. He is only just 2. Your MCT is slightly different because it is under the skin. I believe they don’t grade those 1 2 or 3.Just high or low. My advice would be if they think they can remove it with clean margins go for the surgery. They will test the tumour at that point so you will know how aggressive it is. Depending on it’s likely hood to metastasise you may be offered chemo or radiotherapy(If margins aren’t clean) There are two Facebook groups you may find useful Pet Parents of Mast Cell Tumour Dogs and Mast Cell Tumours in dogs. A word of warning. People do tend to put up fairly graphic pictures and there are more negative stories than positive. Also a lot of holistic therapy advise if you decide to go down that route.However you will realise you are not alone in this. Come back if you have any questions and stay strong.
