Sorry ladies and gents I'm on it tonight....

So, I've got type 1 diabetes ( insulin injections) had it for 16 years, relatively well controlled. Interested in the training of medical detection dogs. Last night I woke up and needed a sugar fix, went into the kitchen for snacks and Bella lifted her sleepy head as if to say 'mum it's 2am, what u doing?' Then went back to sleep :) I've trained her to not jump up when I'm testing my blood sugars and having injections ( she just sits and waits, too cute, she's learnt it's not treats) I've heard some dogs can detect low blood sugars and alert owners?! Any truth in this?! If so how? Would be very interested! And yes she would probably need to sleep In my bed and not be shut in her crate at night I know ;D

The medical detection dogs are fantastic. Try this link for one of the main organisations training them.... and I think they sometimes help train an existing pet, too?

Very interesting thanks! Mine is under control and no 999 emergencies thankfully so not in any way eligible however, there is a section on training your own dog, it advises kc citizenship obedience first , then complete paper work with blood sugar readings ( I'm guessing they would need to be very very low for training to be offered) but still worth a shot hey? :)

I've had no direct contact with this charity but know that when I was living in Milton Keynes there was numerous articles in the paper about them and they were asking for volunteers. Think it would be well worth chatting to them.

Oooh, I remember this when it first aired on the local news. The dogs are amazing but apparently it's are down to their magnificent sense of smell and the dogs can be trained for other health issues.
