Feeling pretty sad ATM. Milly has Elbow Dysplasia. She will be having a CT scan followed by surgery on the 11th September. I'm sad for Milly being in pain and having to have surgery plus I was really interested in agility and fly ball but the specialist said he doesn't think she will be ever able to do either of them. :'(

    Oh no.....how awful, Annette! :'( :'( :'(

So sorry to hear this. Sending you hugs and prayers. Why so long til the surgery? Is she on crate rest until then?

Really was hoping this wasn't the reason for her limping. :'( :'(

Oh no, that really sucks a whole lot :( :( :( Is it in the one elbow only or both?

I am pretty sure that David's Lady has had surgery for this and of course is now a very active girl. I'm sure that Milly will be just the same once she has a new elbow. Still, it is not a road one would ever hope to have to go down.

Big hugs and lots of pats to Milly.....

    Re: Milly is limping again.

Thanks everyone. Surgery is a while away as we have a holiday planned and paid for and we leave on Monday. The specialist only works 3 days a week there as well and he said it was fine to wait until then. I didn't want to leave her with our house sitters after a surgery. She is allowed 30min daily walks and can do that twice a day if not limping. Just need to restrict all running, jumping and sudden stops. So no balls etc. he said she really can't do anymore damage to the actual joint except increasing the inflammation and pain level.

He is confident he can improve the joint but obviously there is no cure. She will start a joint supplement tonight and after surgery will receive a weekly injection into the joint for a month. She may need these injections at regular intervals after that but we won't know how regularly until then. She will also be on regular anti inflamatories. Recovery time will be 2-6 weeks complete rest depending on how much further degeneration has occurred since her last x rays. And how much longer one bone is to the other which may require further treatment to that bit. He won't know until he goes in.

I don't know much more than that. It's all a little overwealming. Thanks heaps for your support I really appreciate it.

    Re: Milly is limping again.

Oh Annette, I know how you feel right now. After I found out Charlie's limp was something serious, that was going to impact on the future, I was so sad and so numb. It felt just so awful and dark. There isn't anything I can say now that will make you feel better.

I know the future restrictions will make things seem bleak now, plus the prospect of the horrible time you are going to go through before she is recovered. :'( :'( :'(

But....you will get through it and come out of the other side. You'll find alternatives to flyball and agility and still have fun. Lots of fun.

Charlie has been able to continue with his gundog lessons - he'll never go shooting or work properly, and I'll never let him jump or do too much. But we just modify our programme and get on with our life. If it turns out for Milly anything like it has for Charlie, there will be a balance between you and Milly being free to do anything, and keeping an eye on what it is sensible for her to do, but you will find that balance and once you have it worked out, it won't impact on you day to day.

So sorry to hear the news. Hugs to you from us.

    So sorry to hear about Milly ;( I'm sending all of you big {{hugs}}
The good thing about all of this is that after surgery she should be in a lot less pain and you will be able to get out and about with her again. I hope you still manage to have a good holiday.
Please let us all know how you are all doing, we are all here for you xx

Really, really sorry Annette. But you will get through this, and Milly will have a happy, pain-free, active life with you.

David is away on holiday at the moment, but once he is back I am sure he will be able to give you some advice, as Lady had an elbow operation, and now does picking up throughout the winter. So don't despair (though I agree, fly ball and agility are probably not going to be an option).

I'm so very sorry for you and Milly, big hugs from us!

My parents in law have a lab with ED and he pretty much self regulates. They have some supplements for him, he's never had surgery and some days are better than others. I would say though he's a happy, much love, well walked pet :)

Julie is dead right, you'll get through and find the right balance for Milly and yourselves. All the very best :)

    Re: Milly is limping again.

Thanks again everyone. I am feeling a bit better about it this evening. Poor thing has had itchy eyes for about a week and has started to rub the hair off so I took her to our local vet this afternoon and it looks like seasonal allergies. Could only give her a cream though as a course of tablets would have taken her too close to surgery date and it could have meant she wouldn't be able to have the injections etc. so she looks pretty misserable ATM. She is pretty out of sorts after the long drive there and back and the strange places we went. Just unsettled her I guess.

Poor love is doubtless confused and not feeling great. I know I would feel the same.....lots of cuddles and a nice tea will be just the ticket...

    Re: Milly is limping again.

So sorry to hear about the diagnosis. What kind of surgery is Milly going to have?

Many Labs that have had elbow surgery live pretty normal lives - with fetching and all. I am sure Milly will too.

Cookie has mild ED in his right elbow, diagnosed two years ago. He is on joint supplements, but is still a very active 8 year old. ;) We didn't do surgery, but that really depends on the severity of ED.

    Re: Milly is limping again.

They are going to go in Arthroscoply(spelling?) and remove the extra cartilage and any bone fragments that may be there and if needed cut one of the bones? Not too sure of much more than that. The last thing is only if one bone is longer than the other when he goes in. Apparently about 25% of cases have this but we are hoping she doesn't as it's a much longer recovery and has to be cut in a particular way very carefully. The specialist felt very positive that he could help her joint pain quite a bit and thought it was best to do it now while she is young. He felt that once they get to be constantly pulling up lame after very small amounts of exercise it was best to do something. He felt she will live a long happy life with just some restrictions on jumping etc. I am confident I am doing the best thing for her. I am just disappointed that we will not be able to do all the things we had hoped too. But we will love her just the same. Doesn't change anything. I just need to rearrange her future. Lol haha and I will think about getting a second dog next year sometime as I am still interested in doing other things. Milly will continue with Obedience training as it's very low impact and she does love it :)
