Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! Thank you all so much for the sympathy. I know you all know how hard this can be, even when you know it's the right decision. :'( I'm trying not to dwell on how awful her last day was for her, but it's a hard image to erase. One of my sisters said to just think about all the baying, jumping, and howling for joy that will greet me when I make my own last trip. I've loved and lost 11 dogs in my life, so I should be well-greeted! I "sent" a wish to my father and Dante (the old dog who was Molly's closest companion for about 10 years), both passed on, to look out for Molly when she arrives and be sure to show her where the frisbees are kept! My dad really thought Molly was a special dog. He grew up with Labs and thought no other breed could match them. Big sighs...
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! 11...wow....it never gets any easier, does it. :'( Thinking of you and sending prayers your way....hope the other pups are a comfort to you... :-\
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! I'm 62 and have always had 2-3 dogs - never one at a time - so they add up! I decided a year ago that I probably had enough years left to get one more baby puppy and still be healthy long enough to be with it till it reached "that time". I didn't want to find myself with a young dog to rehome, if/when I end up in some kind of institutional care, however pleasant it may be! If Daisy lives to 12-15, which is the life-span range of all my other dogs, I'll be 74-77. I'll still want a dog in my life, if at all possible, but it may be that I become a rescue home or adopt one of those poor older dogs that find themselves homeless and bewildered. Henry will be 4 in February, so I figure he's good till 2022 or so; Daisy till 2027 or so - that will get me through a few more years, eh?
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! Henry and Daisy will definitely get you through a few more years. They'll look after you and keep you on your toes for a lot of years not just a few. ;D Take care xx
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! Ah Nancy hope you are doing ok,I've though about you a lot this week x
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! I got Molly's ashes back last week and, with the other two dogs in tow, walked to one of the lovely spots in our big field to spread them. It's a spot where other animals we've lost have ended up, so she's got good company. We say hello to them all when we pass by. Daisy now weighs as much as Molly did when she died (about 52 pounds - about 23 kg), and is as tall, though not as bulky yet. The difference in behavior is stark, though! A mellow 14 year old vs a crazy 6 month old, though both very sweet-natured. I do miss Miss Molly, but 14 was a good long life (still horrified at her last day, though! Shudder...) Thank god for the other two dogs! We keep on keeping on, though, don't we?
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! I'm glad you have a happy place for her ashes. 14 years with you is 5110 happy, love filled, days. That wipes out one day. Hugs to you.
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! A dog should have a field to always run in. If you find yourself thinking about that day stop and make yourself remember a fun day you had together and smile at the memory. One day it will be the happy memory you think of first and that's how you should remember Molly. Take care Nancy daisy will keep you busy.
Re: Molly in Minnesota is sick! I'm sure she is happy running free with her friends now I'm sure in 13 years time Daisy will be just as mellow
