Hi all Ziggy is now 16 weeks old and learning manners well. He still mouths occasionally and if my face is near his he'll nip gently at my chin or nose. He doesn't really hurt but it's a shock! Sometime's he mouths at my and my other half's and my daughter's hands and arms. I was worried this weekend as I knew that we were going to have a house full of family, including young kiddies, that he's not met before. I was worried that he might be a bit mouthy and nippy! There was no need to worry at all. I watched very carefully of course but he never once mouthed or nipped at anyone - just lots of licking! My question is, why does he mouth and nip at me and OH and daughter but not at others? It's quite upsetting!
I have just joined this forem and my 6 month old male yellow lab is doing the same to me he gets so hyper and even though i raise my voice and say no to him he gets worse its like he thinks im his play mate. I have always had labs and cù is a lot of work
He's just trying to play with you, saying that you're his favourite. That's lovely, although obviously not so much because of the way he does it. You don't need to raise your voice and say no, just remove all attention (including eye contact and saying anything at all) for a few seconds and he'll quickly learn that nipping actually stops the game and all interaction, rather than generating attention. Once he's calmed, re-engage him with a game and he'll learn that being calm brings good things.
Because he loves you and wants to play with you Labradors are the bitiest, mouthiest pups on the planet because they are so happy and friendly. I have a 16 week old GR - no biting or mouthing! It's a revelation after five labs and lab crosses! He needs to learn that humans can't play using teeth like dogs do. Our bite is rubbish and our skin is thin.
