Our 4-month-old Lab has been sleeping through the night almost since we brought him home at 8 weeks. At 6 weeks, he had no trouble sleeping until 7:00 am on the weekends, and weekdays he would go out around 5:30 when my husband gets up for work, then runs right back into his bed for at least another hour or hour and a half. Now, he goes back into his crate after his 5:30 wee and only sleeps for 1/2 an hour. He whines, then begins to bark until I get up and feed him. He doesn't have to "go" . . . he just wants to eat. He is completely tuckered out at 8:00 pm at night and sleeps on the living room floor until he goes into his crate for the night, usually around 9 or 9:30. We try to hold off giving him his dinner until after 5:00 pm, but he just barks and barks until we feed him. He won't play, just whines, barks and bites until we feed him.
I would try keeping a small amount of his dinner back to feed in the evening as he may be waking early in the morning with genuine hunger-pangs. If you are in the northern hemisphere, mornings are getting lighter earlier so it might be worth making sure the room is dark.
