Just watch the magnesium in terms of drug interactions with antibiotics, as well as check kidney function is OK.
Your post brought tears to my eyes. So often we take our own pup's health for granted, sometimes forgetting there are others, like yourself, who are struggling on a daily basis to keep their pups healthy and safe. Bless you for your dedication and compassion as you continue to make Riddick's life, and yours, more comfortable. I'm fairly new to this forum, so I don't have a lot to offer except a big cyber hug and best wishes on your journey to find more answers. ❤️
Okay, we headed back to the vet tonight as today was his worst yet. He was unable to get up or pee or anything without help, and just a short walk outside wore him out. And at 35kg I don't have the strength to pick him up - thank goodness for my son. Riddick has stayed true to himself and baffled our vet. He hasn't had a "typical" reaction to any of his meds! We are stopping the KBr, and switching to Pexion as we slowly wean him off the Pheno. The Pexion is WAAAY more expensive than the Phenobarbitone, but it has fewer side effects and there's FAR less risk of long term liver damage (since he's only 5). She examined him and for now it doesn't seem like any kind of spinal issue as there is still feeling in his feet, and his reflexes are slow but there. He's in good spirits, he loves his food, he's just battling to move... He behaves as though he thinks someone or something is holding him down. He's going back to the vet tomorrow to spend the day - they will do bloods to check his electrolyte levels, kidney function, and do a sugar curve (just in case). I really need my baby back... I need my shadow back...
I'm so sorry to read about how unwell Riddick is. I hope all the tests tomorrow lead to a way forward.
I'm so sorry. I hope the tests bring some answers. So difficult for you. Thinking of you and Riddick...
Keep busy today, you will miss him like mad while he is away for the day but hopefully they can collect all the samples they need to find out exactly how to proceed x
I hope today brings news of a better way forward for Riddick. You're doing a brilliant job of caring for him - thinking of you.
So sorry about your poor lad Riddick. You are a real special lady. Hope all goes well for you both today. I will be thinking of you. Hugs xx
Thank you very much @Joy, @Pilatelover, @MF, @Beanwood, @drjs@5, @Dexter, @Granca, @Cath, and @Atemas. Dropped my boy at the vet this morning early. He seemed stronger this morning than yesterday, but I'm half afraid I may be seeing things in desperation... Here's hoping for answers. Thankfully my precious Riddick is not too stressed to be at the vet - he has spent so much time there in the last two years that he has gotten to know the vet and staff well, and they like him and all his quirks a lot (like keeping his path clear, and filling his food bowl with water 'coz he eats like he's never seen food).
I can't tell you all what a help its been to talk to you about this! My precious boy is well known among our friends and family, and theirs, between my Facebook updates and my blogging about him. Incredibly I have had strangers pay for me to get him to the Animal Eye Hospital when the cataracts started developing, and friends and family and strangers contributed money so we could buy the disability harness that has been such a help with his seizures! And so many people have told me I should put my Riddick "out of his misery", even though they have seen with their own eyes that he is fine when his seizures are under control. Yes we've had a rough month, but its not the first time, and we will get him better again. I'm not crazy. As much as I love my Riddick, having my animals is about quality, not quantity. If he can't regain mobility then he will have no life, and yes - then I will consider taking steps. But epilepsy and diabetes can be managed. And because of how we've been battling this week, I haven't told anyone how rough its gotten.
Having had an epileptic dog I really feel for you. They are normal between fits, but when fitting it is alarming. My darling boy had been fit free for 8 months (he was just 8 by a few days) and went into status epilepticus and had to be put to sleep. I swear it was because the phenorbarbitone was changed, the drugs had to be licensed for animal use and were different.
