I have friends who have a loveable but very untrained lab. He is constantly running off to visit the bins in the village or after animals, but he always turns up again after a few hours - or when we find him in the street and capture him. He went missing on Saturday and hasn't been seen since. With the amount of snow we had, it could be that he got himself stuck somewhere, but living in the mountains, we'd never find him. That, or someone's taken him, I think are the only two real options. The dog warden always phones if he gets picked up by them, and if he'd been injured by a car and taken to the vet, they'd have scanned his chip, too. We have everything crossed because he's such a gentle giant, but it doesn't sound hopeful
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh what awful news. Your friend must feel wretched. Fingers crossed that he is found safe and sound.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing I'll give you the advice that we used to hand out when people would phone the dogs home I worked at when they lost a pet: 1. Phone all vets in your area and notify them and ask if they've had a dog brought it fitting that description. Just because he is microchipped do not assume they will check. Good vets do, but chips can be missed or numbers misread. 2. Phone the dog warden - you say they always notify you but call them anyway, as above; chips can be missed etc. Also notify them he is missing so they can keep a eye out. 3. Put up posters and put flyers through every letterbox you can. If someone has picked him up and taken him in they might not know what to do with him or just assume he is a street dog and not being missed by someone. 4. Phone your local authority in charge of picking up road kill - not a nice thought but better to know one way or another. 5. Phone your local stray kennels (and also ones in neighbouring counties) and ask if they've had any dogs brought in of his description. As in point 1 - never assume they will check for a chip. Good people should but I have first hand experience of how easy it is to miss a chip or miss off a number. Also microchips can migrate so experience people will scan the entire body of the dog, but again this doesn't always happen. 6. Phone all the above organisations every day or every other day. They are extremely busy and cannot always keep messages from days ago. Keep in touch with them. Good luck!!
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing How awful for your friend but some really good advice from Penny particularly regarding the chip, I know my vet in the UK had problems finding one of my cats chip when we were getting ready to bring them over to France which would have caused problems with his rabies jab etc if he'd needed a new chip but luckily it was found after Oscar was scanned a couple of times. Fingers crossed that your friends dog is found safe and sound.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Ditto on the chip - our vet couldn't find Pongo's first time of looking, and it was only put in a year ago.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh no how awful for your friend and the dog I do hope he is found safe.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Obi's chip is also very hard to locate. Seems that this might be common. I really hope your friend and her dog are reunited soon.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing No news, no They've phoned every relevant organisation and there's no news of him. They are at the point of almost hoping he's been stolen because at least that would mean he was safe. I'm going to print up some posters for them to take up to the ski station for maximum exposure. It's just devastating not knowing.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Knowing how we would feel if Bud ever went missing, i can fully appreciate how your friends must be feeling. Sending out warmth and hope that the news is good and arrives soon.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh I think everyone on here can put themselves right in their shoes and know how worried they must be, Dex legged it out of sight after some deer for about 10 mins once and in that time I every horrible scenario imaginable crossed my mind.....really hope he's found....if they have anything on Facebook tag me Fiona and I'll share it round, keep your two close just in case there is someone untoward around xxxx
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing How terribly upsetting for the owners, I hope with everything that he is found very soon poor love :'( :'( xx
