Re: My friends' dog has gone missing
Oh I think everyone on here can put themselves right in their shoes and know how worried they must be, Dex legged it out of sight after some deer for about 10 mins once and in that time I every horrible scenario imaginable crossed my mind.....really hope he's found....if they have anything on Facebook tag me Fiona and I'll share it round, keep your two close just in case there is someone untoward around xxxx
Thanks, Angela - it's not on Facebook because they're not on there, and I wouldn't want to put anything on without their say-so because it was a mutual friend (who doesn't live here) who specifically bred their bitch to produce a puppy for them, and I assume he doesn't know yet :-\ We live in a very small community here and word travels fast so I know everyone will be keeping an eye out for him, but it's also very busy with people coming in and out of the country with our borders with France and Spain, so if it was theft, then it's likely he's long gone. Our best hope is that someone picked him up and has taken him in thinking he's a stray - although he doesn't look anything like a stray, weighing in at 38kg.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh, oh! We've had some news! Someone saw one of the posters I made and phoned them this morning. Typically, she was Portuguese (I made the poster in English, Spanish, Catalan and French!!) but anyway, she got the idea and said she had had him for a few days in her house, but he'd done a runner yesterday. So, the good news is, HE'S ALIVE!!!!!! We still don't know where he is, but he's not down a hole or under an avalanche. I am SO happy! Now we just need to track the silly boy down!
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing I hope your friends get him back. Sounding hopeful! Obviously this is not new behaviour though. I guess your friends are thinking of how they can keep him on their property in future to stop this happening again.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing The big problem is he has no recall. So he hoons off after deer, other wildlife, or runs off to the village to scavenge in the bins. They're not the type of people to spend the time necessary working on training, either. He gets very long walks every day, so it's not that he's under-exercised; he's just learnt that there's more fun things elsewhere. Hopefully, this will give them a shove to rethink things. I think some of it is simple ignorance - for example, they have the littermate of my two, too, and I see her recall, which was taught before she was fully weaned, being broken because it's not being used correctly or reinforced. They think I'm mad because I still train my two - "but they already know how to sit!" - and just don't "get" that it's a long-term job. I know other people have given them advice (good or bad, I don't know), but there's only so much you can do!
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing He is also a good escape artist. They pretty much have it cracked at home now, but the last time he got picked up by the dog warden, they went down to pick him up only to find he had escaped from there!!!! ;D ;D ;D
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Yes, indeed....you can lead a horse to water..! Definitely up to them to get serious about this. You've been a good friend to help them try to find their dog.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Let's hope he's found, and that this gives them the necessary shock to do some proper intensive training with both their dogs.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh no There was a confusion in the language. It turns out he was hit by a car on Saturday and killed. The vet still has him, but couldn't find a chip. I'm devastated for them. He was such a gorgeous, happy boy, even despite his reprobate ways, and so gentle and caring with the puppies. RIP beautiful boy
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh no , I am really sad to read this Fiona , your friends must be devastated , what a tragic end to life
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Oh god that's so sad. :'( He looks beautiful in that photo. What a tragedy.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing What very tragic news, after having their hopes up that he had been sighted. Poor owners, they must be absolutely heartbroken. He looked a very noble and handsome dog.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing That's very sad. He looks like a lovely boy. I feel very sorry for your friends, I'm sure they are heartbroken. But I also feel a bit angry to see that lovely dog and hear that he lost his life in perhaps a very painful way - training is a form of necessary care for dogs, and they should really have taken better care of him.
Re: My friends' dog has gone missing Such sad news and such a waste :'( Can't help feeling it needn't have happened like that, but your friends must be devastated
