Awww Nanda I feel this was the best way possible. Our last dog had to be put to sleep on the operating table, we never even got to say goodbye. It was a horrible shock as we were told she was going to be ok. I hope when it's my lab's time, we can have this type of goodbye that Nanda had I always like to think of the dogs who have passed on as living in the prime of their life
Oh, such sad news, but what a beautiful way to go for this lady who had such a troubled start. What a difference your friend made to her. Run free and fast, Nanda
Oh her poor foster Mama. I'm sorry that this thread took such a sad turn. Their time with us is all too short. Sending love and positive thoughts your way
Me too. The morning after Brogan died, I was quite sure he was with me the first time I walked down the street without him, bouncing along at his place on my left side, saying, "See, Mom, I'm not old and slow anymore, I can ruuuuuuuun!!!!".
I have wept some tears for her - funny how we can cry for a dog we've never met. Run free lovely girl xx .
Nanda's human told me this story today and then sent me a write-up she did several years ago for Galgo rescue telling Nanda's story. I thought I'd share it here. Apparently she was a tough nut to crack at the beginning, that Stog. 1:16pm Jun 15 NANDA... 2 years ago, M. told us a rescue story during the 4 months of fundraising we had organized for shelters big and small - to give members of this group an example of what rescue work means. Nanda remained as M's own... we have just learned, that she crossed the bridge last night after 9 years of being loved and cared for. To honor the many rescue and shelter workers and their never ending struggle, here is NANDA's story again. Rest in Peace, brave girl! NANDA’S STORY ……. As told by M I was at the vet when she received a call and she started crying when she finished. I asked her what was wrong, and she told me about a Galga that she had just seen through the Filaria (Heartworm) treatment and now the owner wanted to put her to sleep. The dog was brought to the vet, and I fell in love with her at once! She was on three legs. The fourth one was being hold up and she had a wound that showed the bones. I would compare it with a thick book. I asked the vet if she could be saved, and she said yes but she was not going to be able to hunt anymore. I decided there and then to take her! So they cleaned the wound and told me how to keep it clean, and let nature take its route. She was very shy! But she did get into my car and we drove home. Once there, I closed the gate and let her out. Well, she jumped over a wall and disappeared. You can imagine how I felt! I went after her, but she was quicker than me on her 3 legs. She was in a strange place, so she did not go far away. I left food and water for her, hoping she would come back. But every time I tried she escaped from me. Until the third day. She was exhausted. I was coming back from town and saw her lying against a wall next to the street. I stopped the car and got out. She crossed the road and went into a place with trees. I followed. When I saw that she had settled down in the shade, I sat down and started talking to her. And I pushed myself closer and closer without looking at her. When I was close, I looked up and I saw that look of defeat that almost made me cry! She let me put a collar and a lead on her and followed me towards the car. Back home, she entered her kennel and did not leave it when someone was outside. Only by night when nobody could see her. On the eleventh day I found her in the living room in a bed next to the fireplace. She had decided that she would stay with me. From that bed into my bed, did not take long. And now her domain is the sofa, which I have never had a chance to sit in since it came into the house. She was OK with me, but would not have anything to do with anyone visiting. She never came out to see who was here. Then Thor came to us, and the picture changed drastically. Suddenly she was out running with him. And she was the entire time dependent on what he was doing. She came out of her shell. But it had taken 5 years. Now I am so proud of her coming out when there are strangers and want to know them. But they cannot look at her, because then she goes back in. As long as she has the initiative then it is OK and she comes to all that come in and manage to ignore her. We had to amputate the entire leg, as her spine was getting out of the proper place. She was a new dog after that. She has been with me for 6 (almost 7) years and she is the pride of the family! Kari, the alpha girl and Brutus the alpha boy, are just feeling responsible towards her, and look after her all the time. To see them all together and happy is everything anyone could ask for. Nanda is a special girl, growing old surrounded by love.
Im so glad she had a good life with your friend, I'm sorry she's gone. It was nice to have heard her story. Thank you
A sad but also happy story.... So sorry to hear this news. Hope her human is doing ok, considering.....
I was already feeling sad for Nanda but that sent me over. Zoomies over the bridge sweet girl ("") ("")
Not only was she loved by her new family, she was loved by a bunch of loonies on a forum site who'd never even met her, but who all fell for her as soon as they read about her
I spent most of the day with her yesterday and I told her I was talking about Nanda here on the forum and all the kind things you all were saying. Nothing makes losing a beloved dog easier, but I do think she liked that knowing that even more people would remember Nanda. Nanda's human is extremely active in rescue (she retired to Spain and then founded her own refuge here) so the condolences were coming from far and wide yesterday on FB, in all different languages. In other words, Nanda was loved by a lot of "loonies who'd never even met her who all fell for her as soon as they read about her".
