Charlie has been in the wars again. A couple of days ago we noticed him licking the very top inside of his leg, had a peek and saw what looked like a long scratch from a bramble or something similar. Regularly washing it with cooled salted water and kept an eye on it. Still lots of licking so a on goes the cone straight away which he doesn't mind at all. Last night went to clean it and there's a small hole about the size of a pea right above the scratch which looks horrible, we didn't see it before which is odd as we have been cleaning the area 3 times a day and he couldn't subsequently have done anything else as he has been on lead walks only, so off to the vet this morning. She said it's a dreaded barbed wire wound without a doubt, no stitches required thankfully so ABs for a week and he has to wear his cone for 3-4 weeks We felt awful but the vet said it was in such an awkward area it was easily missed. He was a good boy at the vets having the wound cleaned thoroughly, he got lots of treats and cuddles xx
Oh no, the poor lad... Hope he recovers soon and perhaps he wont need the cone for the full 3-4 weeks.
Poor Charlie 3-4 weeks is a long time with a cone. At least he doesn't seem to mind it. Hopefully it's a speedy recovery
Poor boy Some wounds are really hard to see so can understand how you didn't see it before. I hope it heals quickly. Sending lots of tummy rubs x
Ouch, horrible! We don't have barbed wire where I am in Andorra or Spain, so when I see it here, it horrifies me. It's barbaric and should be banned!
It's awful and everywhere round here in the countryside, sticking out of the ground, nailed to broken fences etc. I agree it should be banned. Thanks everyone for your good wishes. The wound looks so nasty a hole with a gash coming from it, everytime I look at it it upsets me. I'm hoping it won't take as long as the vet suggests so he doesn't have to wear the cone for so long but I think where the wound is it could take this time due to the possibility of it reopening. Fingers crossed x
So relieved, Charlie is out of his cone after much TLC and now NO licking, keeping the wound bathed twice daily it has healed nicely. 3 weeks bless him but he was so good wearing the cone and let us put it on without a seconds fuss, we just said "cone on" and in he would trot Still not chancing any off lead walks for the next week or so, do not want the wound to open up. Wearing the cone really is the only course of action with wounds, no licking means a quicker recovery even if it is a pain at the time. xx
