Hi I have a 9 month old black lab last Wednesday afternoon he just started limping on his left front led never saw him do anything to explain this, he has never limped before. We took him to the vet on Thursday and he game him some painkillers called onsior 40mg to take one a day he has been on these since Thursday but they don't seem to be doing any good as he is still limping and lifting it when he is sat any suggestions on what this could be or what to do now?

    Hi there,

It's impossible for any of us to diagnose just with chatting to you here ,your vet is the place to go,but many of the Forum members have experienced limps in their dogs. Had he done anything different that morning or the day before? Any enthusiastic play, extra long walks ,spectacular Labrador leaps? All of these could explain a muscle strain which can cause a limp.Aches and pains that are only muscle strain can take a fair few days to go.Have you rested him carefully to give it the best chance to disappear? Has his paw had a really thorough check? There couldn't be anything like a thorn embedded right into a pad,or a cut that is hard to see? My dog skinned his paw pads on Astro turf and this caused him to limp.
If you have rested him carefully and medicated him as Advised by the vet I would probably take him back in ,it's always best to be cautious with a limp....

How many days tablets did the vet give you? And what did they say about taking him back in? If it was me and I had rested him and he was still lifting it not wanting to weight bear I would go back to get him checked again.
I hope he's ok ,I know you will be worried x

Sorry to hear. My dog hurt both front paws between the pads and then licked them raw. He limped for a week until it healed. I know that it was this causing the limp because he didn't limp indoors on the tiles, only outside on the beach sand. Once the skin had healed he stopped limping. Mind you, he got no painkillers. I'd imagine painkillers should stop a limp?

When he was a puppy he limped on both front legs, alternating over a year. No diagnosis was made by our vet, they couldn't give a definite reason. But I suspected the head halter hurt his neck and might've pinched a nerve cos he limped after most classes (dog school insisted on head halters). Once we stopped the head halter, the limping stopped.

Best of luck getting to the bottom of it.

I didn't think x-rays should require a GA? I thought for x-rays all that was needed was a sedative?

Let us know how the x-rays go and what the vet says.

He is such a cutie -- love that avatar pic!

Best of luck with the x-rays, costs sounds right unfortunately. My girls x-rays cost about £640 which includes a check up with the specialist. As far as I'm aware x-rays always involve a GA, Mabel needs them every few months and she has never had a sedative either at my local vets or the veterinary hospital.

Maybe it depends on they type of Xray? Casper has has hips/ back, Benson has had full hips and elbows. I think they do pull them around a bit to get the best views.

Sam had an X ray before his recent surgery , but as he was already under GA for the surgery itself , the charge was only £150 , I think with a big dog , most of the cost is for the GA as it goes on the weight of the dog , hope all goes alright .

Hi. I am so sorry to hear what happened. I hope that they can figure out exactly what happened with your puppy. Perhaps you might also like to consider getting him a Dog Ramp for easier navigation around the house and even when climbing into your car. Sending you good vibes, hoping to hear some good news soon.
