Nellie was just recovering from kennel cough nicely, she only really coughed for 2 days and didn't seem poorly at all in fact she has been climbing the walls wanting to go out and play with her friends! Late Friday night my husband went to take her out so we can avoid any other dogs when she caught her claw on our welcome mat and she has torn and twisted one of her claws! She went for her walk as we didn't realise what she had done until she returned. It doesn't seems to be hurting her too much and sheis not limping or licking it too much so we have decided to hold off taking her to the vets until they reopen on Monday ( there is an emergency vet but it's nearly £100 for a consultation) Our trainer offered to come round to trim it so it doesn't get caught but she said it looks so nasty she doesn't want to make it any worse! The picture below was taken on sat morning but it has twisted a little more and is almosted twisted all the way round! Does anyone have any tips as to how to help healing? image by nicolamorris0208, on Flickr
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Ooh Nicola that looks so painful for Nellie I don't know if maybe you should cover it with something to stop her catching and ripping it right off :-\ Hopefully someone with experience will offer you some advice. xxx
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Oh, that looks like the nail tear that Maisie had. I'm afraid we had to have a trip to the vets and it was removed. However, although we went to the vets she coped very well until the next day. I was just careful where she went and like Nellie didn't seem to be in much pain. So hopefully she should be ok until tomorrow.
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Hi Debs, Did Maisie have to have a general anaesthetic to have it removed? I'm just hoping we can get an emergency appointment tomorrow as she has caught it tonight and it looks worse
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Oh heck, have you got anything you can bandage her up with, crepe bandage or something similar and maybe a sock over the top? Yes she did have to have a general anesthetic
Re: Nellie in the wars again! I tried putting a sock over it but she wouldn't leave it alone and she's not really touching without so I thought it would better to leave it alone and to try and keep her calm ( yeah right)!
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Poor lass. The vet should see to that. A new claw will grow back in its place. It's not an 'emergency' as such but it'd hurt and there isn't a lot you can do yourself. Try not to stress - she will be ok once it's seen to
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Ouch, ohh the poor girl. I should think the vet will be able to sort that out quickly for her. Just for future refrence when my last dog hurt his claw they put on some PetFlex & gave me some to take home. Great stuff & easy to apply. http://www.andoverhealthcare.com/animal/cohesive.html?id=5#top Although he did also have a lampshade on his head to stop him removing it.
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Hi all, Thanks for all your well wishes. We've been to the vets this morning and the vet was able to clip it right back without a GA! (Thank god). He did take her away so I didn't hear her yelp though! There was no bleeding and he said it looked ok so was advised to let it heal naturally. Nellie didn't seem to traumatised so all good. X
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Good news! It looked nasty. Lots of extra cuddles for being a brave pup.
Re: Nellie in the wars again! Poor Nellie. Glad it has been sorted and hopefully it will heal up nicely with no further problems
