An update - I walked Poppy with friends on Sunday, in an area new to her. We walked past a bronze statue of a man pointing into the distance, and it set Poppy off into full-blown freaked mode, barking, hackles up, rushing backwards and forwards... I managed to quieten her by walking up to the statue and touching it and eventually she calmed down again, and trotted off with her doggy friends, happy as Larry.

It was only a few minutes later that I suddenly realized - this is what she used to do all the time to strangers. AND SHE DOESNT DO IT ANY MORE!!! I havent seen her doing the freaky barking thing for weeks! Brilliant!!

Maybe it's the gun dog training that has given her confidence, or maybe she's just growing up a bit. At any rate, I am thrilled to bits, and thank you everyone for your advice!. :D :D

Wow well done Poppy, Karen I always think Poppy is so much older when you describe her and what she achieves but she is still a baby. Great work both of you. :D Helen x

Clever Girl Poppy!! way to go. I wish I could say the same about little Cuillin...well, she seems to have got over her fear of some things, but will decide she is scared of something else quite soon after, bless her. This weekend it was Someone Opening a Beer Can...that Pppphhhhttt noise...quite obviously A Bomb. Backed away with her ears back and her Ninny face on and then ran off and hid....poor Cuillin. there is the odd beer opened in my house from time to time so she will have to get over this one!

Heehee... Never had that problem, my dogs always seemed strangely inured to the sound of beer cans, or wine corks popping! ;)

They all have their funny little ways though, don't they? Pops is still very freaked by our reflections. We have big floor to ceiling windows that look out over the garden, and every now and then she'll suddenly notice OMG THERE'S A DOG AND A PERSON OUT IN THE GARDEN!!! MUST PROTECT HOUSE AND HUMANS! BARK BARK BARK GROWL BARK BARK!!! With much rushing backwards and forwards with hackles raised etc ::)

Kills me every time... ;D ;D

ha ha! yes Cuillin has the Reflection Thing too but its only at night and its the reflection of the lights in the window (complex wee soul...)...she will be quite happily pottering about in the lounge and will glance at the window, stop dead, low growl then crescendo to loud barkage until I go to the window, make a bit of a show of checking out what she is barking at, tell her no problem cheerfully, off she trots again happily. Then I shut the blinds....

Yes anything that moves in the street is barked at through the window until someone comes to check it out and then she's satisfied she's done what she can to keep us safe. ;D She does know a few names though, so if she barks and it's Rosemary/Jo/Alex/Will and I tell her who it is she stops immediately and settles down again.

    Strange creatures.
