    ....and least I think so!

We've been away for a couple days to attend our boys' university convocation. My regular kennel is not available - not sure what is up with them, but it means that I"0've had to put Simba in a different place, which is far less convenient as it is a half hour drive away.

Any how he was there for a couple days last weekend and then home for two days and then he had to go back there for two nights again. Kennel owner was very pleased with him first time around, he had lots of fun playing with other Labs and retrievers.:)

This time around....well, apparently he jumped/climbed her 6 foot fence. Which is really Not Good as the kennel backs on to a busy 4 lane highway :eek:

I have no idea how long he was gone or how she got him back as this is all second hand information, my husband had to pick him up today as we are currently down to one vehicle.

Anyhow we suspect while he was AWOL he got into some nettles:

Apparently he was itching at his nose like mad for awhile but he seems to be ok now....he's sleeping peacefully at the moment.

I've googled nettles on dogs and it looks similar to this, so I think this is what has happened. Poor pup!

Anyhow hopefully it will settle down without too much difficulties for the poor guy. The kennel owner put some peroxide on it to keep it clean...not sure I would have done that but oh well. My instinct is just to leave it alone and let it heal - any suggestions? Has anyone else had nettle stings on their pooch?

Oh Simba, that looks sore :(

I think a watch and wait approach sounds sensible. Hopefully the irritation will be gone now and it heals quickly x

    Oh no, the poor sausage!

I would probably leave it alone too. Provided it's clean it will heal up by itself. Looks clean and not infected to me.

I don't want to mention the dreaded cone but maybe have one on standby....

Poor Simba, ouch looks horrible :( I bet the owner of the kennel's had her heart in her mouth. Doesn't sound great but at least they got him back safely. I really wish Simba a speedy recovery with that. Yesterday I got stung by nettles and bitten by horse flies quite badly so I understand how you are feeling Simba :( xx

My dog often goes into nettles and gets stung as he rubs his face on my legs, I have never seen a reaction like that though. If it doesn't settle quickly, I would take him to the vet.

Oh no, thank goodness it was nothing worse and he is back with you!

I also don't think that looks like nettles - Charlie is forever in nettles and the worst he gets is a bit of redness. Mind, I suppose it depends on how much a dog scratches....

I'm also not convinced that is due to nettle sting. My dogs run through nettles pretty much every day because that's what spaniels do for fun  but I have never seen a reaction like that. Could it be something like poison ivy?

Watch it closely for any spread or blistering, there are plants whose sap can cause really nasty reactions such as Giant Hogweed. Definitely Vets if it gets any worse or isn't healing quickly.

I've brushed up against nettles myself and never got anything that looked that bad. And I don't have hair for protection on my arms. Mostly, on me, they were just very itchy. Of course maybe he scratched them. If you get them as soon as they happen crushed up jewelweed leaves relieves the itch.

That looks bad but I think the bigger concern is - how did he get out? Do you really think he jump/climbed?

He had a quiet night but is itching like mad this morning. I'm taking him to the vet soon as it opens. I don't know for sure that it is nettles, it's just a guess. It's something that caused an allergic reaction at any rate.

So....not nettles. Staph infection caused by sticking nose under kennel door or through bars or whatever. :(We have a whole boatload of antibiotics, antihistamine, topical cream, etc etc ....and I am currently getting up the courage for the cone.o_Oo_O:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Good news is that it should be considerably better by Monday
