Hi Everyone, I know this is a difficult subject to approach as everyone has a different opinion/view on this subject: Our Ozzie is an 11 month old Chocolate Labrador, who has from the 1st day of getting him humped his soft toys, but we stopped this by every time he did it, we would take the tog off him, and replace it with a chew toy so now he doesn't do this. However we have a worse problem now, he now tries to mount every dog we meet, it doesn't matter to him if its a female or male one. He is a very excitable dog, but when he stayed with our puppy school trainer, she says it is a mixture of him being nervous and excitement and not knowing how to control those emotions. We are wanting to know will getting him neutered help with his need/want/urge to mount every dog we meet? I know it is not guaranteed but I would like to know what peoples opinions and experiences are? Katie, Nick and a Frustrated Ozzie
Re: Neutering a Male Dog It is very difficult to say. If his behaviour is motivated by sex in some way, yes, castration will help. If though, it's as your trainer says, and it's about being nervous, or socially awkward, then no castration won't help. If you were thinking of castrating your dog anyway, and are happy it's the right decision for him, you could go ahead and see. Otherwise, I'd be looking up older teenage socialisation classes to improve his confidence around other dogs and/or learn more normal ways of interacting with other dogs. Best of luck with it.
Re: Neutering a Male Dog Yes, I agree with Julie. I'd say that desexing/neutering doesn't necessarily stop humping (though it will mean there are no parenthood consequences if he does ever do it for a sexual reason). Like Julie said, if you were planning on doing it anyway then it's worth a try. He's 11 months so he's done most of his growing. My dog was desexed at 7 months but still humps his favourite cushion and the occasional entire female. And the odd desexed male. He may have been much worse had he not been desexed (not sure what he was like beforehand as he was 9 months when we got him).
Re: Neutering a Male Dog Totally agree with everything Julie and Rachael have said. Best of luck with your decision
Re: Neutering a Male Dog The vet recomended that we had our ESS castrated a few months ago as one of his testicles still had'nt dropped. He humped things before occassionally when excited & still does it now when excited. It seems to me that some dogs hump & some dogs dont. Good luck with whatever you decide.
