Hi, Not got a puppy yet - am about to move from working 2 days a week down to not working (very early retirement) in January and having had dogs as a kid and loved them feel that the time is right (my mother has always had one or two on the go ever since). My only reservation is we have 2 cats who are nearly 8yo and whether we can integrate them successfully. One of the cats is actually like having a dog in the way he behaves and insists on being the centre of attention so really do not want to spoil that too much but things would change of course. My other half thinks the dog would be good for me and we can manage the cat/dog side. Hopefully learn plenty from here (not found a post on the introduction of puppies to cats yet) and look forward to the future !
Hi, @Diablo , that sounds nice, very early retirement and getting a puppy. Welcome to the Forum from myself and 19 month black lab, Cassie, on the welsh/English border in the Uk. I do have a cat who was nearly 6 when Cassie came, she was used to dogs before but is quite feisty. I'm maybe not the best person to advise, but it can be done. They are gradually getting calmer around each other but I'm sure there are things I could have done to speed it up.
Welcome to the forum, from me and from my boy Pongo! New puppy, what an exciting time. Looking forward to hearing all your adventures, especially the cat-dog relationships....
Here are a couple of threads about cat introductions. I haven’t read them through but they may be helpful https://thelabradorforum.com/threads/introducing-a-puppy-to-adult-cat.18899/ https://thelabradorforum.com/threads/introducing-new-puppy-to-my-cats.9496/
Thanks for those, had searched but not turned these up - might need to work on my search criteria skills !
Welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Keir from Manchester UK Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's four years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. We did the same and got her when we retired. Keir is my fifth Guide Dog puppy, a yellow Golden Retriever/Flatcoat cross and he's six months old.
Hello from me and Lilly! No cats here, but my girl goes a bit bonkers by winding her up saying "Where's the pussy cat?"
Welcome from me, Wispa (6) and Tuppence (4). No cats here either now, except for an occasional visit from a maine coon which keeps the dogs in their place! It might be a good idea to have a crate and/or a pen for the puppy as a 'puppy safe place', as it's easier to restrict puppies than cats! Looking forward to hearing about it.
Many months later, actually did not finish work until March and this weekend we "reserved" our puppy. Going back at 6 weeks to play with the puppies and "match" the litter to the family's but looks like we will have one of the boys as they are less popular and our children are 18+ so not asked for a quieter one !. Due to then collect August 19th so tons of things to get ready in the garden and house - lots of excitement ....
Welcome from me and Isla, my choc lab 20 week old puppy, it's brilliant having a pup and you'll love it, hard work but she makes me smile every day. We had 2 cats of 10 when we got our first lab many years ago. We put the pup in her crate and let the cats sniff and meet her that way, gradually day by day doing this they accepted the puppy and many years later they lay together in the garden! So it can work, good luck and enjoy your new puppy
