Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Oh interesting article pippa. barley loved to jump and do agility until his hips started to get worse, and we stopped him, he was still happy to continue but it became noticeable as he adopted an unusual gait and knocked down the jumps, he only ever jumped on medium height.
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump I wonder if anyone reads the articles, - or whether they just spot a 'hot' phrase, and off they go???
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump ROFL. ;D It's like hotel ratings websites. You only get posts from people with a beef or an axe to grind. LoL.
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Important article in my mind? I have taught my dogs to jump on command, but as Pippa says be very aware of barbed wire fences. We get a lot here 'Sheep country' I have also taught them 'Under' which can be helpful, teach them to find a gap under a fence. This was brought home to me a couple of weeks back, when I sent the older dog for a pheasant runner in the next field. She went straight for it but came across a fence and stopped, I then directed her to a gate about 50yds to her right which she went 'Under', unknown to me there was another fence across that field which she went under and picked the bird. Now the problem arose she did not go back under that fence but tried to jump it carrying a cock pheasant, she got caught up on the barbed wire!!! From 100yds away all I heard was the yelp from her, but she was lucky the fence did not hold her. And she did not drop the bird. Some nasty scratches was the result. Barbed wire is the most evil stuff, now they have started to put the stuff on the bottom of fences!! If a dog goes under a fence they get a nice few stratches down their backs Can't win
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump I loathe barbed wire too, have found a few scratches on Riley before but nothing too serious. I'm all for jumping on command and am working on obstacles at the moment as most of Riley's retrieving has been on the flat or through cover with only the odd bank or stream and no fences. He would rather find a way through or under than jump by incination so hopefully that'll be enough to keep him clear of most wire, sadly there's too much that gets left lying around gggrrrrrr !
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Same here , most of Sams retrieiving is in rough ground , lots of brambles and bracken but few fences , he will also chose to go through rather than jump over I truly dont think that the fanatics do not read the whole article, just see the trigger word and let fly , shame that they have nothing better to do x
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump After doing Flyball Obi loves to jump. It's definitely a learned skill. Trouble is, now he jumps the fence into my veggie gardens like a gazelle and I get squashed seedlings and broken tomato plants (he is after fertiliser : ). I think that it's a good idea to teach your dog to jump safely and sure footedly.
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump I deliberately avoid encouraging Lady to jump, but that's only because she was operated on 12 months ago for ED and really needs to avoid high stress on her elbows. She actually discovered all by herself the joys of jumping and climbing on our annual holidays in Cornwall. Dry stone walls even 6 or 8 feet high are not a barrier (so needs watching re stock in next field) and Cornish stiles are a long leap challenge sometimes if she's feeling frisky. She also loves to leap the water filled ditches on our walks across the fields.
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Labradors should never be encouraged to jump as a puppy - probably not until they are a couple of hers old as it plays havoc with their hips, which are always suspect! Unfortunately puppies just love to jump up and down as a greeting!
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Quite right and Pippa says exactly that in the article. Stopping puppies jumping is definitely a challenge
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump Just for the record.....in Flyball and Agility (both dog sports with a jumping focus) no good club will allow a dog to start before the age of 1 year
Re: New: How to teach your Labrador to jump At Christmas, OH, daughter and I took Pops for a lovely long muddy walk in the Wiltshire countryside. We came up to a fence with a stile, which we all crossed with greater or lesser degrees of grace. We told Pops to 'hup', as she has been taught, and she cleared it beautifully. Remember that I am the one with dodgy hips in the family - OH had to lift me over the fence!!! It was not a pretty sight. Luckily, OH was so busy hoisting me over the fence, he didn't get his camera out in time! Pops is a beautiful fence jumper though:
