Hi, Just acquired an 11 year old (?) Labrador from the Los Angeles County Animal Shelter. His name was Odin and that's good enough for us. I don't think he has ever been trained and doesn't know how to greet other dogs except by charging them which doesn't go over well with the other dogs and their owners. Also never played with and doesn't know how to or isn't interested in retreiving a ball. Other than that he's house broken, travels well in a car and gets along with our cats just fine. Loves other people and nothing seems to startle him. Seldom barks and is slowly learning the basic commands. My previous dog was a German Shepard that came from 6 generations of AKC Obediance Champions, so I'm spoiled by having had an extremely fast learner in the past. I wanted a Labrador because of their friendliness with others. Joined this forum to pick up new information as we proceed to learn together. Jon Woodland Hills, CA
A very warm welcome. Just LOVE your avatar picture. Handsome and happy looking chap! This forum is a great support and you have done a fabulous think taking on an oldie rescue. I'm sure you will be rewarded many times over. jac
Welcome! What a lucky boy Odin is - and beautiful too. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, I'm sure he will learn quickly with kindness and patience.
Welcome to the forum What a lovely thing to do, rescuing an old boy. I'm sure he'll give you endless pleasure. You can train dogs to play like you train anything else and, eventually, it becomes fun for them. My two adults didn't understand "tug", but I taught them the game from scratch (even clicker training them putting their mouths around the toy) and now they love it Let us know how you get on with Odin
Awww Odin looks lovely! I have a very soft spot for older labs... You've done a wonderful thing, giving this older gentleman a home
Welcome to you and Odin! What a great thing to adopt an older pup. I love the old grey muzzles too. I suspect Labs have a much different learning style from GSDs but are equally as smart, so with your previous experience you'll be teaching him what you want in no time.
Welcome Jon and Odin from Hattie 9 years and our rescue boy Charlie 6 years. What a lovely old gentleman Odin is, that face What a wonderful kind thing you have done taking on an older dog, so many are overlooked. He looks so gorgeous with a smiley face. Tell us some more about him and keep us up to date with his training xx
