Hi guys, We're going to be new Labrador owners in 6 weeks we get to bring our lil girl home (so excited) and I was just wondering if you have any recommendations on the best food? We would like to feed her on dry food. What do you feed your labs? I realise she will be on a puppy food first but was just interested to hear what you all feed yours. Many thanks Amy xx
Unless the breeder has the pups on a really poor quality kibble, you should keep her on the same food initially (some people say a few weeks, others say months). Xena was on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy with the breeder, so I kept her on that until she'd finished the bag. I then swapped to Orijen Large Breed Puppy. Eukanuba isn't a bad food, but it's lower in protein and higher in grains which means you need to feed more of it. Orijen is 80% protein so you feed much less of it, even though it's considerably more expensive than other brands.
Not quite 80% protein - it's 80% meat, but meat isn't pure protein. Orijen Large Puppy comes out at 38% protein. Definitely stick to the food she's on for a while. If you feel it's a bad food, or not agreeing with her, start swapping it out with a new one after she's settled in - after a week or so. She'll be on puppy food until she's about a year old. As for which one? Ask that question and you'll get a hundred answers. Orijen, Burns, Eukaneuba, Royal Canin, Skinners, Millies Wolfheart.... you know what? They're all fine. Avoid the super cheap ones that you can buy in the supermarket, then pick one that suits your pocket.
Thanks for the replies.... We will of course keep her on what she is on at the moment with the breeders I was just wondering if eventually I should be transitioning to another one. If one stood out from all the rest. But probably not by the sounds of it Thanks guys xx
