Hi have been following this forum for some time for hints and tips, then decided to go the whole hog and join in. My little beauty Cassie, was born on 2/11/2014, so is 5 months now. She is a black lab. I original looked on your forum for weights of labs, as never having one before ( had other dogs) was not sure what was the norm. When we brought Cassie home, when she was 8 weeks, knew she was a little small, not realising, for her breed how small, when we took her to the vet for first injections she weighed 2.2kg. Vet said she was small but she didn't seem that concerned. We have had some problems, uti, and still having a few wee problems and just last week she has started limping from front legs :(, so she on restricted walks now. She is an impressive for her, weight of 13kg now.

Hi and welcome from me and 20 month old Harley ☺️

There is quite a variation in weights of labs on here. I think Penny (Penny + me) was about that weight when they got her.

Hopefully the restricted lead walks will help

Hi and welcome from me and 10 month old Juno. Sorry to hear that Cassie started limping last week. Fingers crossed that restricted exercise will solve the problem.

    Re: Newbie

Hi and welcome from my two, who are eight and a half months now. They're also on the small side for the breed; although they were bigger than her as very young pups, at Cassie's current age, Shadow was only 14kg, so it's not something to be worried about. He's now a "strapping" lad of about 18kg ;)

What a shame about her limp. Has the vet looked at it to diagnose the problem? From what I've read on here, it's important to get joint issues looked at immediately because of the long-term risks if some issues aren't treated.

There are a few people in the same boat on here, with both the limping and the UTIs, so there will be plenty of advice and sympathy with both of those.

    Hello to you and Cassie.
I get the impression UTIs are pretty common in young doggies so I wouldn't worry too much. I know Monty had one and when I posted on here there was lots of others who'd been in the same boat.

Hi from me and Maisie. Sorry to hear your problems with your pup, hope you can resolve things soon. Maisie was small at 8 weeks at 4kg and at 13 months is only 20kg, but the vet is very happy with her weight. They all seem to vary alot!

Thanks for the welcomes. Yes Cassie has been to the vets about her limping, that's who said put her on restricted lead walks, we have to take her back to vets on Thursday, but she is still limping :(. Vet would not give her any anti inflammatory, because of her wee problems, which is still being looked at. Cassie is drinking over 2litres of water a day, which is not helping!! We all love our dogs to bits, just want them to be happy and healthy.

Hi and welcome from me and Obi Labrador (as distinct from Obi Spaniel who I'm sure you will also 'meet') :)

Hope you get things sorted with the limp. As you say, we all just want our dogs to be happy and healthy.

Ah I'm slow saying hi and welcome...so sorry to read Cassie has developed a limp.If nothing has changed tomorrow when you go to the vet I'm sure she will get a very thorough examination and you will get a chance to discuss the situation.I only have a pocket size lab,Dexter is 2 years and 7 months and he was 22.8 kgs last week....he's perfect though, not very tall,so he balances out ok.Cassie being on the slight size will help her while she has this joint discomfort....pop by and let us know how you get on tomorrow,I know you will be worried x

We have been through that worrying limping stage.

Oh poor Cassie limping with no anti-inflammatories because of a wee problem. How long are her lead walks? Our vet has always said to restrict to no more than 15 minutes on restricted exercise and no running etc. Hope all goes well at the vets tomorrow, I'm off to the vet tomorrow with Juno for another set of x-rays following her surgery. Fingers crossed for a good outcome for both of us.

Thought I would update this thread. We had some devastating news yesterday, Cassie had an ultrasound because of her thirst and wee problems and then was going to have an x Ray on her legs for her limp. Ultrasound showed Cassie has polycystic kidney disease, this means she was born with this, it's cysts on the kidneys and there is no cure, she only has 25% function of her kidneys now. Cassie did not have the x rays for her limp as too dangerous to put her under anaesthetic. She is only 6 months old and vet has told us she probably will not make it to 2. Vet said that Cassie was a happy sick puppy, sums her up. We have got to monitor her, she may have to change her diet, but really don't know what to say, keep crying. We will give her the best life she can have, we love her

I'm so incredibly sorry that you have had this dreadful news. Massive hugs.

A thought....Are organ transplants an option for dogs..?

What terrible news. Poor Cassie and poor, poor you. Try to take comfort in the fact that she doesn't have any idea of her prognosis. Dogs don't think about their future and aren't scared of the end like we are. She will know she is loved for her whole life, I am sure, however long she has. To feel happy, well fed, warm and loved is all any dog really wants and needs. Keep us updated.

I'm so sorry to hear your dreadful news. Poor you and poor little Cassie and can totally understand why you keep crying. I wish I had better words of comfort or wisdom to offer but my thoughts and best wishes are with you. Enjoy every day that you have with your very special pup for however long she has.
