Just a quick question for all you pros. I will be using a crate with Milly especially over night and was wondering if you leave them overnight or get up during the night to toilet them? How long is too long? I want to make sure she is comfortable and no accidents but also don't want to be up more than nessessary. Thanks in advance for you help. 2 sleeps yay!

Hi Annette, I bet you are excited :) :)

When I got Harley, I settled her down in her cage at 12pm after a wee. I didn't plan times to get up, I left it to her to let me know. I was very lucky in the fact that in the first week I would maybe get up once or twice max, after the first week, it was rare that she would get up before 6.30am needing a wee :). Now at 5 months, she goes last around 10.15-10.30am and lasts til about 7.15am :D

Every dog is different though, and I'm sure others can give you some more advice :)

    Hi Annette

There is information about coping with night times here: Housetraining your puppy and at the bottom you'll find links to more articles on this topic. Shout if you have any questions :)

Probably like Naya, it would have been nearly midnight by the time she went into her crate for the night, and I set my alarm for 3 a.m. Didn't do this for long though - few days only - and then started moving the alarm half an hour later. Within a fortnight or so we were going through until 6 a.m.... I think. Occasionally she woke earlier and if she was squeaking to go out, it was a quick garden visit. Just keep nocturnal garden excursions quiet and calm, so she is clear it is not time to play.

Hahaha. I will try but the amount of excitement in the house waiting for Milly is pretty high. I think we may have a movie night and see if everyone can be good and tired to go to bed and sleep. Maybe even sleep in in the morning as she doesn't arrive until 2. But we still have to get through today yet. It's only 7.55am here in Aus.

The breeder that we had Harvey from suggested trying all-night crating right from the off. So that's what we did and it worked a treat - not a single accident (liquid or solid) in his crate since we had him 2 months ago. That said, we did have the crate in our bedroom for his first 2 nights, just in case ;)
