Re: Not good Oh no poor Harley and poor you A friend's dog had this and bounced back amazingly well after surgery. I hope the op goes well and you get news soon x
Re: Not good Just spoke to the vets. Harley is out of surgery and come around from the anaesthetic, albeit very sleepy still. She had one pocket of her womb the size of a plum filled with pus and another about half the size starting to fill. It's good that it was caught now We are picking her up at 5.50pm. I have taken the week off work to be with her, luckily I have supportive colleagues who are going to cover me We will have antibiotics and pain meds to bring home. I went to see Oj at lunchtime and told her. Hubby came with me as I phoned him when I was in the vets upset. Hubby is more matter of fact than me so is better telling Oj without getting upset. She took it really well and is coming to pick Harley up with us later. We've been to pets at home and brought a few new toys - a kong cow (to hide treats), a treat finding game on a board and some filled bones. Got 3 kongs here too so going to use these for her food over the next few days. Harley usually sleeps upstairs with us, but worried about her using had stairs......should I sleep downstairs with her? Or get hubby to carry her up?
Re: Not good Good to hear this! If it were me I wouldn't carry her any further than I had to, in case I hurt her, and then you also have the worry that she might wriggle and try and jump out his arms (Ziggy style). I guess sleeping downstairs would be the option I would take
Re: Not good that's great news. I would assume that her incisions would be similar to a spaying? for the first 2 nights I slept downstairs close to Kenzi just in case she got up or licked the wound but she never really did so went back upstairs after that and she was fine. I wasn't particularly comfortable lifting Kenzi with the location of her stiches so having her sleep upstairs with me wasn't an option.
Re: Not good So pleased to here this- looks like things could have been a lot worse. To be honest, I think I'd go for sleeping down with her for a bit as carrying might stretch or pull the wound too. You might find she's not that bad with the stitches etc. once the infection threat is out if the way. We had a soft cone for Merla and put her in her crate also overnight. She couldn't move much but managed for a couple of nights and then she was ok without the cone.
Re: Not good That's good she's doing well. I'm pretty sure it's just like a spay so aftercare would be the same as for a Spey? I would take it easy on the stairs for the first few days, not necessarily carrying her but maybe if you can take her up on a lead so she walks slowly? I would worry about her jumping on and off the bed overnight though - is she prone to doing that or happy to sleep on the floor all night?
Re: Not good Good news that she has recovered from the op. I am sure you will be surprised how bright she will be tomorrow especially now she hasn't got all that infection inside her. I remember helping at an op with a Corgi where the two uterine horns were the size of my forearms filled with pus, they should have just been a wee bit smaller than my little finger!
Re: Not good I'm so glad that Harley's op went well. Ruth sends her love. We're both looking forward to seeing Harley and Holly chasing tennis balls again, though it might be a few weeks while Harley recovers from the op. Stairs are a problem. If you take her upstairs, can you block the stairs in case whe wants to go down during the night? If not I think I'd stay downstairs for a couple of nights and barricade the stairs.
Re: Not good Thank goodness all went well , bless her . Definately no stairs, even carried it could pull at her stitches . if you feel the need to be with her, then camp downstairs for a night or two but honestly, she will be so much better within 48 hours, so relieved for you all x
Re: Not good So glad you caught this in time Ternaya, it can be a silent killer, but having made it to surgery she should be fine now. Recovery is the same as for a traditional spey. So pleased she is OK.
Re: Not good Oh Naya, so pleased to read the good news. Bless her, she'll be glad to be home. I think I would sleep downstairs with her. The less movement the better for her. Lots of hugs to you from me and waggy tails from megs to Harley.
Re: Not good Good grief....Pippa says it's 'silent killer' how scary, thank goodness you know every inch of her and took her in to get that bump on her head checked. At the time Dexter had his tail op he wasn't allowed upstairs so I slept downstairs on the floor with him...harley won't care tonight where she is Ternaya as long as you are with her... They do bounce back quickly....tomorrow she will feel so much better and that's when you have to step in as they don't remember they have had an op...you sound prepared with toys and kongs and sooooo lucky at this short notice you can take time off, aren't people kind to help you like that Hope you have a comfortable night....well YOU probably won't on the couch or floor but you know what I mean ....I know you will be fine as long as Harley is calm and settled. Big hug, you've had a horrible day x
Re: Not good Really good news the op went well. So glad you caught this in good time. Wishing Harley a speedy recovery.
Re: Not good Just to add, for all owners of an entire bitch, it is important to check out any vaginal discharge that occurs outside of a normal season. And especially in the few weeks after a season has finished. This kind of discharge is not normal in dogs. Around a quarter of unspayed bitches will get pyometra in their lifetime and the risk increases with every passing season. Many if not most bitch owners are not aware of this. I think I'll put a sticky up about this one. It is quite a scary and common illness.
Re: Not good So glad she's out of surgery and ready to come home x I'd be sleeping downstairs too for a night or two. Speedy recovery little girl
