So, as part of my evening rutine, I walk around the house to find out of place dishware for the machine. Tonight I found my favourite old glass in by the sink in the upstairs toilet, one of two I'd inherited from a great aunt, and a piece with some purely emotional value. Jackie was, as always, following me around like a shadow.
I gather up the dishes for the washer, old glass in one hand, other dishes in the other, then head down stairs, except... as I stepped onto the first step of the stairs, Jackie walks up and 'bops' the underside of the hand holding the heirloom. Up up up the glass flies, out of my hand and over the railing, shattering in a million paper-thin shards all over the tiles of the mudroom. It took me about a half-hour to vacuum up the bits, all the while deeply conflicted, because I know very well that Jackie didn't do it on purpose, but at the same time mentally cussing out his choice of timing. (Don't worry, I made sure to get him in a safe room before cleaning that up. Thankfully, Godzilla slept through the whole thing.)

Oh dear, it's a shame about the glass but at least no one was injured. Treasure the one remaining glass, put it in a safe place and you'll always remember this moment every time you look at it. Now you have one glass but two memories to treasure for ever, your lovely Aunt and your puppy days.

That's a shame, and broken glass is murder to clean up isn't it? I think you definitely need the remaining glass 'for display only'.

When my last Lab was a puppy he chewed the corner of a hard-backed book my mum had given me. Now that both Mum and Rolo are no longer alive, the book brings happy memories of them both.
