I'm very sorry Kate poor Casper but as has been said you can now help him which will make him feel much better and, from the sounds of Rachael and Stacia's dogs, have a long and active life. Once you've got a plan sorted, know how well the painkillers help etc and got into a routine it will just be part of everyday life and not quite so scary. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Poor boy . He is an amazing dog who has been through a lot in his lif étude. The big difference is that he has you, Marcus and Benson. If you need a hand with Benson give me a shout xx

Yeesh sorry to hear this! I've never heard of it before so good to know that others have had dogs have long happy lives with it! I'm sure once you get your head around it you will be able to find a good routine for Casper that will help him out immensely. But hugs to you and gentle pats for Casper for now, I hope you are feeling a little better after the shock of the diagnosis.

I've had a similar experience as rachael. The diagnosis is the hard part but with your vets help and Caspers strong will you will find a way. My dog was diagnosed when he was 6 and after 18 months of real hardship for him and me wondering whether i was doing the right thing, things improved and he has had a great life perhaps not the life I wanted for him but I can honestly say he is a very happy boy. He's 13 1/2 now and although his body his failing now his mind a spirit are still strong.
I found a good physio and still do hydro therapy with him weekly and he has massage and joint/leg manipulation eveyday. I've found that the positive (if that the right word) side of having a dog like this is that you take such good care of them and pay attention to whats happening with them physically that they seem healthier into old age.
Caspers a lucky boy to have someone like you looking after him.

Best wishes and hugs to you both

Ankylosing spondylitis is a painful disease, but if managed properly, it will not be such a big problem except for a little bit reduced flexibility. Painkillers will definitely help for a short period of time and physiotherapy is the way to go. Make sure tat he is getting proper nutrition. From what you have posted, I believe you are in the correct path and he definitely is lucky to have you to take care of him. I wish he gets better soon.
    Cheers
