Ah really nice to see you back....glad the op went well,I know you must feel pulled about now but you must have been in considerable pain pre op.Keep taking it easy x
I had a partial hip replacement 2-1/2 years ago, at age 71, due to a bike accident . Mine was the emergency surgery sort, but I was back skiing after 6 months, and I am barely aware of it now. Hip replacements seem to almost always have a good recovery. The biggest side affect is airport security
@Karen we are working on Mabbel picking up stuff. She has never played fetch as she was diagnosed with ED at about 6 months old, and the orthopaedic specialist advised no retrieving at all. Although I'm finding it really good for me to focus on bits of training keeps the brain active and the boredom at bay. I howled with laughter about you considering using the dog whistle, like you I thought better of it. I've hidden both of them as OH thought he would have a go at using them for recall. That's not happening . He's trying his best bless him or maybe at times he is just so trying
As it hasn't rained for quite a while and I'm feeling much stronger I went to the woods today with OH and Mabel. (It's not quite 3 weeks yet since my op so there are many long weeks ahead!!!) Just as I thought Mabel's manners have lapsed she pulls like a truck on the lead and takes OH for a walk. I did tell him their special walks of her choosing the route were not useful! She does her own thing and is definitely in charge. I'd put a baby pouch of mushed up sardines in my pocket and managed some good recalls. All is not lost, definitely some hard work ahead once I'm fit, on a big plus she's very happy, healthy and as beautiful as ever. So I'm grateful she's in one piece and although I'd wish he'd carry on with her training I can't fault his love for her. He's just reminded me she's 15 months today so they've just celebrated with a play fight on the floor.
Don't worry about Mabel being the one in control when out with OH, concentrate on getting yourself back to fitness and health - you'll soon have things back to normal once you're the one in charge of walks
Glad your feeling stronger and could walk in the woods - excellent Once your back to full health you will have Mabel's training sorted so don't worry xx
Glad to hear you've been out for a walk. Mabel will remember who's in charge when you're the one with the lead again!
Glad to hear you've been out and about Harley walks lovely for me (on local routes!), but pulls hubby constantly. I think they know who they can get away with it with!
How great you are getting out for a bit - I hope you have a quick recovery. Charlie isn't perfect on lead, but I'm always consistent no matter where we are. The fact my OH and my dog walker are not consistent hinders things a bit, but not all that much. I just do not let it be an excuse, and keep training. He is not so very bad. In new areas he'll try it on for a bit, then settle down, although isn't great. In super exciting places he'll settle down and walk properly eventually - sometimes after 30 minutes.
Great to hear that you are recovering well. I'm sure you'll get Mabel back on track once you can take the lead again. Good that she is being gentle with you, that's a big bonus, Mabel the little nurse
Ha ha....he looks very serious! I think you need to be a teenager to master the selfie completely LOL. Good picture
And for that reason I don't do selfies. I did once and I was told how rough I looked. . Not the sort of thing I was aiming for.
Dexter is the same as above....and I have the same challenges with my Hubby and dog sitter .I've been really trying to walk new routes for his lead walks these last couple of months ....he is a lot better now at settling down on a new walk but he needs a lot of management to remind him he should be walking nicely x
Mabel's check up today, all in all I'm over the moon. Problems with rear limbs seem to have corrected themselves. Hurray. Great reduction of lameness on front limbs. She has stopped shifting the weight on her left front leg, walking much more evenly on four limbs now. The specialist has explained about further surgery which involves cutting and pinning her bones which changes the way the ball sits in the elbow socket (that's the simple explanation). He doesn't want to do it now as she's coping so well. Although if it needs to be done it has to be before she's five, for best results, so plenty of time. Review in 3 months. Gloating moment . He feels I'm doing an absolutely splendid job. Marvellous. Yay . She walks better than me. I'm 4 weeks post surgery incredibly slow progress. Still need a stick and limping like mad. Although now I can walk Mabel with my OH. Hmmm only thing is it now highlights how certain behaviour has slipped. Oh well training is always ongoing.
I had my sticks until at least six weeks after surgery. Don't try to push things too fast; it does go slowly but you will get there. Great news about Mabel!!!
Hello Claire, I am just now reading your post.....and your surgery is over and done with and a month has almost gone by....how are you doing? I was curious because I am having knee replacement surgery a week from today! So seeing your post and all the others, made me feel pretty good about recovery after surgery. Hope you are doing GREAT. I am 79 and active. The last few months have not even been able to walk my dog Cooper (2 years old), so am truly looking forward to full recovery to get back to normal. Hope you are well and dancing the jig!!
