Re: nuetering.... Thankyou everybody for moral support.....today's another day but he's going to get watched like a hawk today and long lead going on him for his garden toilets until I see how he is.Bless him,it's not his fault,it's only nature, but he's got the strength of a tsunami! Lynne, don't feel a fool at all,it's your decision to make and you can change you mind as many times as you want .Barnie (Dexters cousin) had the appointment made and cancelled 3 times...they finally took him in on the 4 th !the clinic staff couldn't believe they turned up!Dduring the discussion last week we said we had decided no until something changed.....well something did yesterday!i really would have liked to have waited until he was older but all see what the vet says today....... Thanks again everybody, have a good day x
Re: nuetering.... I've got a clever dog......2 trips into the garden on the 30 m lead.....no interest in making a break..... Tentative trust restored........ I said to Chris lets just try him while you are still home, lead off...bullet out of a gun over the wall..... You know that video link yesterday starring Fenton???We've just completed the remake....t shirts will be available soon :-[ had to go and apologise to a set of golfers :-[ :-[ :-[ thankfully they had a sense of humour even the one he barked at .....the devil has taken over here! Oh it's only 8 am.....feels like lunchtime already today!
Re: nuetering.... I'd like to order a "Jesus Christ, Dexter" t-shirt in blue (to match my dog's accessories). Size medium. Can pm you my credit card details
Re: nuetering.... ....with The Devil Rides Out' on the back! Ha ha ha!royal blue for you Rachael for sure ;D Poor fella he must wonder what's happening to him, think Ive lost my puppy boy.Ill go and see our vet this afternoon,we are resigned to the fact that its a when now not an if....
Re: nuetering.... O Angela, what a pain this all is for you. I hope Dexter the Devil Desert Dog (DDDD) is better behaved today. (Charlie and I would like our Jesus Christ Dexter T-Shirt in red, please, to match Charlie's accessories...).
Re: nuetering.... Really sorry for you Angela. What an IDIOT the owner of the bitch in heat is. Some people just don't think. You really can't blame Dexter at all - it's not even really a question of recall, even the best trained intact males can suddenly go completely deaf once they get a whiff of The Scent... Been there, done that and got the T-shirt! : I'm actually not a huge fan of neutering just for a quiet life. But in your case, I really don't think you have much of a choice. You have a young, fit, working strain male dog. This would be enough of a challenge if you lived in the countryside in England somewhere! But living where you do, and with Dexter's testosterone now on overdrive AND him knowing that he can clear the garden wall like an Olympic hurdler... Well, I wouldn't think twice about it. He won't know the difference afterwards... But you will! And he won't hold it against you.
Re: nuetering.... Well Good news is I'm doing a roaring trade on t-shirt orders...bad news is our vet is off today...to be honest I know where she stands, she asked me at our first meeting WHEN not IF we were getting him castrated...I'm just gutted if the WHEN has to be now before he's fully grown....but like you say Karen our environment has a huge bearing on the situation.Chris was livid with the other owner especially as I had a little :'( and my Mum shook her fist a bit too. There isn't a great choice of walking areas so we all have to share them and I suppose that dog had been cooped up all day......anyway if it hadn't happened yesterday it would have happened another time....he's obviously not going to fall into the 'not interested category'!b :-\ although interestingly enough,in all the time we have had him,we have only had a couple of random, halfhearted humps and apart from 1 they have all been male dogs..... Thanks everybody ......didn't see this coming last week when we were all chatting about it!
Re: nuetering.... Oh heck Angela , so sorry that you had this experience when clearly it was the owner of the bitch who was to blame for taking her out in a public space . Trouble is, it does knock the confidence , this is what happened with me and my usually laid back boy, he turned into a lothario in seconds and I just knew that, especially given his weight , I was in for a humpy bumpy ride : We had previously thought that we would not have him castrated or leave it and see how he ( and we ) coped but it wasnt to be , plums gone and peace restored
Re: nuetering.... I know this isn't at all funny for you Angela...... but you will come back and re-read this thread when peace has been restored and see the humour in it! ;D ;D ;D Sorry...but it has conjoured some hilarious pictures! (do you do the T in cerise? ;D ) jac
Re: nuetering....
in all the time we have had him,we have only had a couple of random, halfhearted humps and apart from 1 they have all been male dogs.....
Oh yes Riley's not totally uninterested he met a beautiful neutered flatcoat the other day and decided he wanted to hop on. Frankly the flattie was the size of a small pony so Riley stood no chance but I didn't want him getting in the habit so he was firmly told to stop! It sounds like you've recovered slightly from your posts and made a sensible choice for you and your situation, like Karen says - he won't hold it against you.... btw our T-shirt in a light blue if possible please ;D
Re: nuetering.... Don't worry everybody I have laughed already,my confidence ( and ego ;D was a bit dented) but not my sense of humour. The episode has been re-enacted several times ,all strictly sticking to the truth( no exaggeration needed) people can't believe how far he took me......there's about 20 houses backing onto that area,if you saw that happening you wouldn't have believed your eyes......ill go and reenact my position of resistance this eve one more time in situ and Chris can take a photo.....this will eventually become the logo for the yet to be released ,limited edition t shirts!
Re: nuetering.... Guess what,I sent that post then took him out for a wee( on his lead :) and he cocked his leg for the first time!its official, our boy is grown up :'( ......... ;D let the next phase begin! Thanks everybody x
Re: nuetering.... Angela, you should be grateful you don't have Pheasants where you live. About a year ago I was walking or should I say being dragged along with Charlie when all of a sudden I was head on into a thorny hedge whilst Charlie pursued a damn Pheasant. He was also on a halti and managed to drag me quite some distance along a grassy track, I removed myself from the hedge looking around to make sure nobody had seen me covered in leaves and twiggs. When they want something they don't care whos on the end of that lead, but thankfully I too can laugh at that one ;D ;D ;D When owning dogs a sense of humour is an absolute must ;D Helen xx
Re: nuetering.... Obi asked me to tell you to tell Dexter that he (Obi) has several girlfriends and that he finds that the absence of plums is no real barrier to the blossoming of a beautiful (platonic) relationship.
Re: nuetering.... Want to try find a way of saying this which doesn’t make me seem like a mad anti-neuter freak (which I’m not at all, if Charlie has problems that it would solve, I would have it done). But as Helen’s example shows – isn’t bitches in season only one reason Dexter might pull like a mad thing, and only one reason he might jump over the wall? I mean, lots of young, confident dogs will jump over a low wall and head off for a game with the golfers, neutered or not… I mention it just to support the view that you should still take your time over the decision - they can't be put back on! Apologies in advance if this is the wrong thing to say right now as you dab dettol on your knees!
Re: nuetering.... Oh Helen,funny....as long as you weren't hurt, you do have to be able to laugh at yourself as well as our furry friends....if we could make a video montage of all our calamities it would have to have the by line.....'No Dogs or OWNERS were hurt in the making of this film'. .....well only sometimes the owners in the effort of making sure the dogs done get hurt he he he! ??? Dex says thanks Obi.....Mum told me plums are for losers!!
Re: nuetering.... I guess the thing is that you cain't get a lady pregnant if you ain't got no balls, thereby potentially saving your human parents from a whole heap of potential hassle. It's not so much the escaping that's the issue, but the wild oats one sows while escaped. If the fence was higher and if Angela could improve her grass-skiing skills then the management option might be feasible. But it does sound a bit tricky to me.
Re: nuetering....
grass-skiing
New Sport!!!
Re: nuetering.... No Julie, not at all ,all opinions welcome. I'm of the belief that it was the other dog.Dexter has been over the wall twice before( sounds like a prison break ;D)he always came straight back.hes shown plenty of interest but Dexter No,has always stopped him.His recall isn't a guarantee but it's really not bad and most times he will come back from people, and there has never been a time anywhere when i've called him and turned and run in the other direction and he's not come bounding after me.He was very different,it was like he was wired,he was bristling, ears pricked,it was definately more than just a kicking up heels moment.....I can't really describe it just to say he was very different to the dog we know.We only got him because he was marking like mad,he probably stopped for 3 little marks and we grabbed him on the last one.He was different in the park too before it happened..... When I took him out to the Desert this morning he behaved perfectly....didn't stray out of my comfort zone, listened to me all the time, came back every time I called him...but as soon as we were back home and he was free,he was the same again, just driven to run..... And marking loads as well???is it nothing to do with the other dog?Is he just expanding his territory?.I don't know, you are right,it's not only a dog in season that would make him run off ,but I've seen him want to get to other dogs for play, run after the rabbits, chase birds and it wasn't that full throttle focus he's shown in the last 24 hours which is probably giving me the biggest sense that it was the other dog. Lets see whenI talk to the vet,we are away for 2 weeks again at the end of the month...it's something I can't cancel, poor pet sitter will get the shock of her life if he's a rampant fur ball of hormones, compared to the cuddly bear she had last time If he was older,I'd have the appointment booked...it's only his age that is making me waver can we survive for a little bit longer?Chancy...... ???
Re: nuetering.... That's it....the UAE doesn't have Flyball and Dex and I aren't quite up to it yet,but I bet we could successfully introduce Labrador Grass Skiing as a new National Sport!!!Blimey with the T-shirt design in the pipeline...we've almost hot a kit you do make me laugh Rachael ;D x
