Yep, I felt I was wearing the cone myself last night.

Really must invest in a soft cone for future episodes....

Yeah starvation has to be the cruelest form of torture for a Labrador! Felt bad not letting him have the remains of my breakfast....

We have an appointment with the vet in about an hour to get the low down.

    Obi's words exactly, Stacia!

He's spent the day at the vet's today. The verdict is that he's definitely had some kind of foreign object go into his foot. He now has an inch long cut in his foot where they went looking for the object. They didn't find it, which means it's already come out or is still in there (but should come out the incision at some point). Obi has his foot all wrapped up now. The vet said he didn't need a cone as it was ok if he got the bandage off and even fine if he licked it as long as we keep it dry otherwise and cover it if he goes out. We don't want him to get the bandage off though so we've put a sock over it (taped at the top). We'll leave the cone off for now....

The vet gave us this old drip bag with a bit of bandage threaded through the top to put over his foot when he goes out to wee.

He's not allowed walks. We have to go to the vet again on Friday so they can check it. He's on anti-inflammatories (Metacam tablets) but no antibiotics (I think because they cleaned it all out well enough).

He got a big dinner tonight :)

    Good news. Pongo is relieved.
And of course the only REALLY important phrase in your entire post is: "He got a big dinner tonight." :)

Phew! Obi won't starve then :D

He looks cute in a sock. Hope it clears up quickly though and socks can just be fashion statements rather than medical necessities.

We've been told what some of Obi's dinners can be,the list can read like a gourmet menu so I know he will be having something scrum tonight!
Great sock cover idea...I bet it's really resilient plastic.
Really hope whatever it was is out and it's just got to heal up now x

It was duck and veal risotto....(not our ducks). He didn't complain about it :)

I really hope it just gets better now too.

We're going to Sydney on Saturday and he was going to be staying with his daycare people (always much fun!) but it's too tricky to do that with his foot so he'll be driving with us to Sydney and back (about 3 hrs each way). We're going up for a party but it's in a nature park that doesn't allow dogs so he'll just have to hang out by himself at my parents' place. Poor man.

I remember Lochan suggesting the drip bag as foot protection at one stage. It is quite tough with a really good strong seam, and is not too big or too small.

Poor Obi still doesn't look impressed. I've used the drip bags they are good and strong. The other thing I did was make a sock out of cling film. Measure a piece that will cover the whole bandage. Paw in middle and it reaches the top of the bandage both sides. About five or six layers of cling film brought up the leg front and back and then folded around the sides, tied with a bandage. It's basically like a removable plastic bandage. I found murphy was happier walking in it as it doesn't flap about like a bag and you can replace damaged layers.

    Fingers crossed it improves quickly.

Good idea about the cling wrap sock!

Obi is a very reluctant wee-er if he has anything bothersome or flappy about his person (e.g. he will absolutely, emphatically refuse point blank to wee with a cone on) so if the drip bag is too disturbing we'll try the cling wrap sock.

Obi is ready for a wee trip. I told him that 'medical chic' is the new 'hipster', but he seems unconvinced.

As I write hubby and Obi have returned from the wee trip. No wee was forthcoming. Instead he spent the wee trip growling at the drip bag.

Now he's taken himself to bed (on our bed...) so Wee Trip Attempt #2 can wait till tomorrow. We'll try the cling wrap.

Poor Obi the indignity of it although it did make me smile imagining him growling at the bag. If you squash the cling film around his foot well it should just be like another sock. Also re usable if removed carefully. Hope it works. Good night Obi

Poor Obi, made me laugh growling at the bag though. Fingers crossed that his foot heals quickly

Oh poor Obi - he looks thoroughly unimpressed by the whole palaver of cones, socks and funny boots. I hope the wound heals up quickly and he can regain some doggy dignity :)

Thanks everyone :) He is really sick of having people play with his foot all the time but is being very tolerant (with the help of treats). He'll be glad to get back to having a normal foot. In the scheme of things it's not a big problem (compared to things other doggies are dealing with). As long as the offending object is gone he should be ok in a week or two. We might have to get read up on forum advice about walk alternatives in the meantime though.
