I use a rope slip lead on Lady. It has an adjustable metal ring on it that prevents it closing tight on her neck. The ring is in addition to the adjuster to control the maximum size of the loop. Can't recall the make now but I like it much more than the traditional slip lead but it has all the advantages of easy removal and application.

I like the sound of that - best of both worlds maybe

Is that like a martingale collar? One that tightens no more than the circumference of the dog's neck? I might look at those.

I also use a rope slip lead on Sam , but only since he learned not to pull and walk nicely on lead :)

I think David's is just like a normal slip lead but with a stopper either side of the sliding ring. A martingale (again - I think) has a collar of fixed length(i.e. no smaller than the dogs neck) and then it has a loop joining the two ends which the lead is attached to and when pulled will close the collar to it's smallest circumference. My in-laws use something similar on their dog.

Thanks, will have a look for those slip leads. Just looked up martingale collars - they are for use when a dog tends to back out of a collar, they close to a pre set circumference.

Re: Ok to use slip lead

We were using a borrowed slip lead which was made of flat nylon strap and was 180cm , I bought one of amazon which i should have checked sizes against the borrowed one .

As using the new slip lead which is made of braided nylon and has a total length of 150cm i have found today it far to short and despite my best efforts and success with the borrowed lead i am find the new slip lead to harsh and it has caused Jake some discomfort over the course of the walk

This evening i have found a slip lead with a total length of 180cm which is made of soft braided marine rope on Ebay sold by The Gamekeepers Wife as i think the extra length does help . Mike
