Adopted a 7 plus year old 16 months ago .Great dog loves to walk and go in the car for rides. Daily routine, The last few days our normal walking routine she will walk our normal route and when going back to the house pulls back the other direction and I have to walk back around the block again and then sometimes really have to talk to her to get her to go home.(78lbs). Then we go on our car ride . Always very excited to do both.Use to be a 10-15 minute deal. She would jump out and go into the house, Now I have to wait 20 minutes or more before she will come into the house.Just sits in the car. I'm in Florida ,nice weather. No changes in the home or weather,no new pets or people. Can't even go to the bathroom without her glued to us. Diet is good.Any advice?

    Hi @Gary Wayne Trant

    welcome to the site.

It sounds as if she is telling you that 10 minutes is not enough.

I take my nine year old Lab for a 50 minutes walk each evening. I also teach her various things during the day. I decided a week ago to teach her to weave between my legs.

Moral of the story: you have to provide them with mental and physical stimulation. Doing the same walk will not cut it I'm afraid.

Maybe she would find going to obedience class to be stimulating. Find one that incorporates tunnels, jumps, and retrieving.

Or do some scent work with her. Labs love it.

I agree with Michael that a 10 minute walk around the block is really just an opportunity to toilet, it's not daily exercise.

At 78lbs, it's likely that she also needs to lose some weight.

Personally, I would be training her at the end of her walk so that she knew that this was coming. We can start the training session in the street at the end, but I'm pretty sure she would want to come indoors for it once she learns to expect it.
