Another thought --- is this a boy thing?? My next pup will be a boy so I'd better get my waterproofs ready lol
WEll I'm the same, no idea on the water and drinking. Another idea for the snatching though. I find sometimes holding the treat completely enclosed in my fist helps. I do this with my neighbour's dog and neighbour tells me I'm the only one she doesn't get snatchy and grabby with. I was shown this trick in a class with the explanation being that the dog doesn't really want to bite your hand and most will not. BUT, you will feel some teeth and maybe get a bit of a scrape. Not a bite, I've never been bitten. And note: "She", this is a girl. My last two dogs were girls and they were both a bit grabby till we did some practice. Another one I advise you DO NOT TRY but we noticed our rescue, the girly pup who had been starved and was understandably grabby, did not grab from small children. Oh, did Boogie mean the water thing and boys?
I think I'm very lucky in both of these......Harley drinks with just her tongue going in the water, and you might get a few dribbles by her bowl, but that's it. From an early age I taught her 'gentle' when taking treats. I hold all treats inbetween my thumb and finger and she only gets it if she is gentle. We have lots of children visitors as well as family who aren't dog people so I thought it very important to train her to take all treats nicely.
Simba is a very neat drinker, but he also is an "all at once" drinker....he never takes just a slurp or two, when he goes for a drink he drinks the whole bowl dry. Which means that if I don't notice him drinking it, his bowl could be dry for quite some time before it gets filled again. Resulting in him drinking the whole thing. And, repeat. Sigh. With regards to snatching, Simba had a bit of a problem with this, but if he snatched at my hand he didn't get the treat. He soon learned he had to control himself. I did get a scratch a time or two, but it didn't take too long for him to get the idea.
Not us,nice drinker here but a bit of a snatcher...this is my bad...on Dexter's normal ' take' I feel his teeth and I've never done anything about it as it hasn't bothered me but when he's getting excited he does snatch ,I don't feel his teeth any harder but the grabbing makes it feel harder I guess.... I hate to generalize but spaniels are MESSY drinkers .....I think it's the ears! Dexter is a bit challenged in the ear size dept so maybe that's why he's a tidy drinker?
I'm new to the site so hoping I'm answering in the correct place but I joined for this very question!!!! Daisy's only fault is greedy/naughty at taking treats.....to the point where it can hurt sometimes. Why are they so greedy and rough at treats when they are such gentle creatures???? Any advice would be great........she is also a sloppy drinker which I don't mind, the chewing has stopped, the jumping is manageable and I've accepted that she would eat til she burst!!! But the losing fingers when giving a treat is not good. as our 5yr old daughter wants to give her a treat from her hand but us now scared and throws it to the floor. I read a lady saying go back to 'take a treat nicely'.......is this info on the site or should I buy the book for help? Thanks.x
Hi There, Welcome to the Forum, sounds like you are making great progress,I hope we can help you with this issue you've come up against.....it's pretty common ...have a read through this ,I think it will help : http://www.thelabradorsite.com/how-to-stop-your-labrador-snatching/ Best wishes Angela
Open palm treating works for me....if I offer with fingers he "tries" to be gentle but fingers would be gone!
