Helen I was checking in for news before my friends arrived from the UK and was a bit worried when I hadn't heard anything....just got back from the airport drop off and have a whole afternoon free.....first thing to do???catch up on Forum News of course!and here's your fantastic update, love it!
I've had a little tear ( of course! ) reading your post....reading you've had the best walk in 2 1/2 years just makes me happy ......but it makes me even happier for you to get some validation and recognition from a professional for all the work you have put into Charlie. You sound so much more relaxed .....what a break through,am so pleased for you ,keep letting us know how you are getting on xxx

Helen , I know exactly what you mean about the attention , its very hard not to over compensate for a poor start in life and it makes perfect sense to make the attention far more high value, like a treat :)

Exactly Kate, but we fell into the 'trap', having said that, I feel we can and are changing and the children are trying very hard too - bless them :)

Helen, I hope your walk last weekend was just the first of many, many lovely walks. You are realistic, you know there's still some way to go... but I am so pleased that Annette looks like being able to apply fresh solutions and to help you all move forwards.

Will be looking out for progress updates, good luck xxx

You arent alone Helen , Paul is a shocker for feeling sorry for Millie , making excuses for her is she is naughty ( thankfully not that often ) , our natural reaction is to pity our rescue dogs but we have to try and remember that they are not in that awful situation now , they are safe and loved , so so pleased that you have some real direction with Charlie, onwards and upwards now :)

Brilliant news Helen. I'm so pleased it went so well.

Like Angela I'd been concerned that you hadn't posted how you'd got on.

I thought if you got advice from a fresh perspective it would help. If you think about it a lot of what she told you you knew. The withholding attention is in the 'Pet Gundog' and when you've just tried having fun with Charlie it's worked, like when you played with the new ball in your flooded garden. You were doing really well before (as she told you) so now things should get even better.

The trying to relax and not get stressed when Charlie is off lead is something I've noticed works with my two. Training is so much better if I'm relaxed and take the view of it doesn't really matter ( which I think I've mentioned before) but it's easier said than done.

It's great it's made you so positive and that you've already seen a difference and had lovely walks together. Long may it continue. ;D

Thats actually really interesting about withholding attention. I can see that.
Lilly will find some deer or fox poo and stand over it. Mostly though she won't roll in it UNTIL I look at her directly (probably with that *oh s@@t* look on my face) and if I approach her she rolls then dances around with her play bows. Its like she enjoys it more if she has my attention.
Of course I am giving her human attributes here ...
    Hmmm....interesting......

Next time Lilly stands over fox poo run in the opposite direction without calling her and see if that deters her :)
