Murphy has spent the last four days and nights at my dog sitters where she didn't take his crate, and he just slept on his bed with her dogs in the living room overnight and would just be left to roam downstairs (again with her 2 dogs) if she had to pop out.
He's home now and I'm wondering whether it would be worth putting his bed in the kitchen by his crate and leaving his crate door open but with baby gate into kitchen shut and see how he gets on overnight.
Earlier I left him for 10 mins with run of the house whilst I posted a letter and came back to him asleep by the sofa.
Do you think this is a good opportunity to de crate him once and for all.

Also whilst I was away over the weekend I was a very bad mummy as it was murphys 1st birthday on Sunday and so I missed it!!
Happy birthday murphy!! Can't believe he's one already!!

Naughty mummy - use those eyes and work her!

I would definitely try de-crating - although he may not give it up easily, give him the opportunity to come and go.

    Happy belated birthday Murphy :)

I would take the opportunity and see how it goes :). My daughter was home for 5 weeks recently so Harley wasn't crated whilst I was at work....I took the opportunity when my daughter went back yo uni to see how Harley got on in the kitchen whilst I was at work. Her bed, kong etc all goes in the kitchen with her and we have had no problems at all (got a webcam linked to my mobile so I can check on her whilst I'm at work) :D

The app is called Jumicam - it costs a couple of pound, and you will need wifi, but so worth it :) I can talk to her, but I can't hear her :)

I'm a bad dog pal...I'm even late on the belated Birthday wishes Murphy, sorry!
We stopped closing Dexter in his crate at about 9 months but we left it in his room, which is closed off with the child gate at night ...he never goes on at night but he will wander in there of a day sometimes.we will alway keep it up to be honest,it's not in the way where it is x

    Thanks everyone.

Well weve had 2 nights where i have left the door to his crate open and the babygate into the kitchen shut, but he has still stayed in his crate, even though i put his other bed in the kitchen too. Each morning i have come down and hes been in there. Iv also left him about 4 times in the day whilst iv been out, and havent shut the crate door and everytime Iv still come back to him asleep in it! Ideally i would like to get rid of the crate eventually as weve only got a little house and it does take up quite a lot of room, so don't know what the next step would be. Iv also checked with next door and he hasnt barked at all when left which was what I was worried about because ages ago when the dog walker didnt shut him in properly he weed everywhere and barked the house down for 2 hours! Luckily he seems much more chilled now.

    :)

Ah he's just growing up Frankie ,bless him x
In our case Dexter phased his crate out himself.....at first he was exactly like Murphy ,taking himself in and settling in there and we'd find him in there when we went out in the day,but then we a realised at night he was coming out and sleeping on just his blanket on the hard floor so we moved his 'Day' bed in there and he sleeps on that now ....they do take up a chunk of house to be sure ...
Let's see what some of the others have done at this stage x

    That good news :)
I am currently selling my crate :) Harley is always asleep on her bed or munching on her kong/hedgehog when I check in on the camera so we decided after a month that we no longer need it :)
