Re: Over weight Labs Maybe these owners think that by putting their dog on a diet they will cause it discomfort ( ie hunger) and that will feel like they don't love their dogs......I'm a bit like that.I hate being hungry, therefore I hate the thought of Dexter being hungry and feeling that sensation.I'm his care provider so I am causing that ,ergo he might think I don't love him......Now my sensible self that is in charge( believe it or not!) knows that that is not true....and Pippas post yesterday helped me immensely with that.Despite my guilt pangs I am vigilant with Dexter and as I said yesterday,I will put up with any discomfort I feel ( however silly and unnecessary) to make sure he isn't overweight. Maybe the eye rollers in the vets are too lazy to do anything ( don't mean to sound horrible) and its as simple as that.laziness has got the poor doggie paunchy in the first place and look at the effort Julie is going to find out the best use of energy for Charlie's intake so training etc isn't compromised .......if you are lazy maybe you can't be bothered to go to that trouble? My Mum And Dad adopted a really chubby golden cocker some years back,Tim.He was like a little barrel, his previous owners thought it was a great trick to roll maltesers along the floor of their long lounge and tell Tim to go fetch......all evening while they sat and watched tv ......mum got his weight down through proper, restricted diet and excercise and he was a different dog but it took time and effort, most things do thought don't they that are worth doing. Bye for now,off to brush Dex ha ha ha ha ha! X
I think you have it there - I bet owners project their own feelings about food and diet onto the dog. They feel that the dog will feel as they do when they have to diet (rather miserable!). Malteaser rolling is just barking though!
Re: Over weight Labs And lets face it........ Most dog owners don't spend hours on lab forums, invest numerous hours (weeks/months/years) on recall and clicker training. For better or worse : they get a dog and just get on with it probably just muddling through. Forum members on here are not representative of the average dog owner. For which our pooches may be grateful (not wanting to offend anyone)
Re: Over weight Labs jac i was one of them that thought i would just muddle on with it how wrong i was
Re: Over weight Labs Let,s face it. A Lab will still look hungry even if it has eaten so much it can no longer swallow. ;D
Re: Over weight Labs '' I bet owners project their own feelings about food and diet onto the dog''... yes I think a lot of folk do, one of my friend's in particular now has to be left with a small bag with a few treats in and instructions not to give mine anything else when i go out and she looks after them, otherwise she will 'comfort feed' them - her rationale being they were looking really sad you had gone, so I gave them lots of treats to make them happy ( I think they have perfected a fake mournful 'we are missing our owner and only Bonios will help' look around her ;D). she is a real comfort eater herself by her own admission. Got home one night to find HALF a box of Bonios gone and two rather smug looking labradors lying happily on the sofa with her... And I go the other way with my two, I'm so focused on keeping a good weight for myself with all the running and training I do (excess kilos lead to knee injuries and slowing down for me, the horror) that I impose the same slightly OTT regime on the dogs now that they are doing so much running with me, keep them on the lighter side to minimise injury risk both short and long term. But vet sister has actually just advised me to put Brodick on a' putting on a few pounds healthily regime' as he looked like a black hat rack when she saw him at the weekend ( I think her description was 'equine' . Poor Brods) . I hadn't really noticed this as I see him all the time, and I think that's an issue too, you don't notice gradual weight change so easily if you are about them all the time...
Very interesting....correlation between owners attitudes to themselves and the dogs. Hmmm... can see a beach survey coming on...how many thin people have thin dogs...?
Re: Over weight Labs I look nothing like Lilly. Much happier controlling her intake than mine ;D (not that that is really very funny - I am much fitter now than I ever was as a teenager/younger person - think its all that dog-walking)
Re: Over weight Labs
I look nothing like Lilly.
;D
Re: Over weight Labs ha ha yes when i go through a slightly pudgier period if not training so much the poor dogs don't get to go pudgier...much easier to cut their kibble down than take my hand out of the crips cupboard.... You can almost read the accusation in their eyes, oi, you aren't looking so great yourself just now you know, fling us a crisp as well....
Re: Over weight Labs This has just put such a huge smile on my face, you'll never know. Absolutely gorgeous.
Re: Over weight Labs
I think Sophie and Lilly look kind of similar though ;D ;D
They are both very pretty, but Lilly looks like she has a longer tongue... ;D ;D
Re: Over weight Labs ;D hee hee I am keeping out of this discussion until I get home and see how Simba has fared in my absence....I have a feeling with all the garbage raiding, table surfing, and extra treats thrown his way as distractions he might be inching up on the scale.....
Re: Over weight Labs Lisa are you nearly home?im getting excited about your reunion with Simba ,everything will feel different and less pressured when you are home with him and don't have your trip away creeping up x
Re: Over weight Labs Ah yest Julie let us know how the survey goes. I am a thin person with a thinish Charlie and a spot on Hattie. All the over weight doggies around here unfortunately have over weight owners - I see a pattern emerging. As for being healthier, I definitely am even for a woman of a certain age :-[, my blood pressure is the best it's ever been and that's down to dog walking. Helen x
