Someone on another thread I created on tick prevention mentioned overexercising during puppyhood and that it can lead to joint disorders later. I had never heard this before so wanted to do some additional research. Can someone explain this to me? What is considered overexercising? Our pup is 8 1/2 weeks old and I currently have been taking her on a 1/2 mile to mile walk in the morning and another walk in the evening. She also runs around with the kids in the back yard, plays tug of war with us with her rope, etc.
https://www.thelabradorsite.com/labrador-puppy-exercise-how-much-is-too-much/ Hello here is a link to article Pippa wrote. It’s helpful. So tempting to walk a pup to far but I was very careful to stick to this. Long walks have waited , my pup is now 15 months and we go for around 2 hours .
Very important to adhere to these rules no matter what impression your puppy gives you. You are protecting the joints. Labs are larger dogs which are growing fast hence the stress on joints
There are different opinions on the exercise subject, but I think definitely all would agree that you don't want to be doing exercise where the pup has to keep going, to keep up with you (since no pup likes to feel left behind, so they will keep on, beyond when they might otherwise want a rest!). Free play, when she is running around with kids off lead in the back yard, is something she can determine the pace of and decide when she's had enough and wants to rest. So don't worry about that.
