Re: Owls Casper is still not doing well so he is off to the vet tomorrow to be x-rayed - the breeder is worried about his hips. If she's not happy with the results she's offered us next hatchling which will be ready in 7 weeks or if that timescale doesn't work she's offered us Casper's older sister (by a few days) who she was planning to keep for herself. Who knew there would be so many similarities with puppies - I certainly didn't expect hip worries with an owl!!!!!!
Re: Owls
Poor little man. What will happen to him if his hips are not ok?
Re: Owls Sorry everyone we still haven't heard, It might be another day or two. I don't know what will happen to Casper, I guess it will depend on what they find. I almost don't want to ask. I will post again when I have some news. The aviary base is being built today and the aviary with flight room (!) arrives on Wednesday. Fingers crossed we won't have to wait too long before it has a new resident x
Re: Owls
flight room (!)
Wow! Now that sounds something to see! I really hope Casper's results are positive x
Re: Owls Sad news today. The little owlett in the picture has been put to sleep. He was really very poorly so no other option. We are now waiting for the next egg to hatch and if everything is OK we'll have our baby owl in about 6 weeks.
Re: Owls Oh no Carole I am so sorry this is very sad news and so dissappointing for you both :'( Keeping my fingers crossed for the next hatchling xx
Re: Owls OK latest update is... The new baby owl arrives on September 1st from different parents from the original owls as it seems the whole clutch were calcium deficient or borderline deficient. The new little one is doing extremely well so fingers crossed I'll be able to show you all pictures soon. The breeder has been extremely fair and helpful - she's having this one for longer to make sure he's really doing well before we take over giving Ian a bit more time to put the finishing touches to the aviary.
Re: Owls Nearly there! we're collecting the baby owl tomorrow which is very exciting. However, the breeder is fairly convinced it's a girl due to the size (females are bigger) so while we had been planning to name it Casper as we weren't going to spend money DNA testing to determine gender we're wondering whether to come up with a girls name or neutral name instead. The only downside is all the brochures about school visits talk about Casper! So do we a) call her Casper anyway - no one will know then look the other way and whistle if she lays an egg... b) pretend this is a different owl to the one in the brochure c) start a lovely thread with ideas for names for a girl owl................
