I found a sore on my boys leg last night that I'm not happy about, it's on his back inside hock is about the size of a ten pence and there feels to be a swollen area around it, he's not bothering with it and it isn't weeping or inflamed looking but of course my mind is racing with thought of Alabama Rot! I've got him booked into the vets this evening but am still worrying myself sick. I think I've read every single article about it now and none have made me feel better. Just wanted to share my worries with somebody :)

I am sorry, I can so understand your worry, I would be feeling exactly the same. However, deep breaths as it could be anything. However, could you not get to see the vet sooner as you are so worried? With that sympton I would be up there like a shot.

Oh god you must be frantic! Try not to panic it is probably nothing bad, hopefully the vet can put your mind at rest.

I know, two things have complicated it really, firstly my vet couldn't fit him in until later - although I know if I'd pushed it they would have, and secondly he's actually under two vets, he's being treated by Sue Armstrong (Balanced Being Holistic vets - 2 hours drive away) for an immune issue, I was dithering (I know I wasn't thinking straight) about who to take him too but decided on my old closer vet.
He's absolutely fine in himself, bouncing round like a looney as usual.

The internet is a terrifying place. You're doing the right thing to check it, but don't panic! Let us know what the vet says.... thinking of you.....

Hope you got some positive advice from your vet. Dr Google is our enemy.

OK sorry for the delay, by the time I got back from the vets last night (1 hours drive) and sorted the dogs out I was too exhausted to do anything. The vet was a bit perplexed, she had a good look at him and nothing was untoward ie temp etc, he was quite clearly full of the joys of life as he'd launched himself at her and given her a big lick on the nose as a greeting (she likes him to wander loose in the consultation room so they don't get stressed -). We went through the possibility of Alabama Rot and the problems with diagnosing it. But when we were having a good look at the sore we noticed that there was a small bare patch slightly lower down his leg - no skin damage and there was a smaller but nearly identical set of marks on the other leg, the vet said the swelling on the sore patch was actually thickening of the skin and she thought all the marks were most likely to be from rubbing on something, which has stumped us because he isn't crated, he sleeps on settees & my bed in the daytime and at night his own huge thick bed with fleecy blankets. She has given me antibiotics (but I'm only giving him these if the sore looks worse and to be honest it dry and looks to be healing) and that if I notice the slightest change in him or the mystery sore to get him back in immediately.

Typical of him to be a mystery just about everything he's had has always not been quite the 'norm', bless him.

So thank you everybody for your kind words and thoughts fingers crossed all will be well for the next week and yes Dr Google whilst occasionally helping can actually be the worst thing to do!

Good news that it doesn't appear to be anything serious

    Relieved for you too.
Lilly had an odd skin thing on her back leg which we eventually had biopsied/removed - it had been there for about a year I guess - ended up that it was some form of callous due to maybe the way she sat or layed. Also lots of soft beds.
So glad your vet has taken a look at it
