The Pen-y-Dyffryn is a converted rectory set in a quiet valley about 5 miles west of Oswestry. Its a beautiful country location on a small lane with no through traffic. Its set on a hillside so the views are lovely.

The owners have been there for about 25 years and have focussed on making it a great retreat for walkers & dog owners who love food. Its very convenient for walks in the Berwyn mountains & Vale of Llangollen, but you needn't drive if you want a good walk. They have a folder of walks, many of which start at the hotel doors, and a stock of maps that you can borrow. Turn left out the hotel doors and after 200 yards there's about a mile of woodland for exercising the dog. Every morning they leave the weather forecast and some suggested walks on the breakfast tables.

And the food! This is not a place for dieting. Start the day with a huge breakfast to fuel you for a day's walking. Need a packed lunch? No problem. Dinner starts with some home made nibbles while you choose from the menu. There's a surprise appetiser, then starter, then main course, then sweets, then optional cheese & biscuits (if you have any room left!) and coffees with home-made sweets. The menu changes daily depending on what the chef can find, and the quality is excellent.

Our favourite rooms are in an annex out the back. They have their own patio, which is nice in the summer. If your dog needs to go out during the night you can just open the door straight onto the garden.

We've just been there for the third time. Have a look at their website on http://www.peny.co.uk/
