Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Hi everyone Thanks for your responses. Penny is much better this morning. I have her a small breakfast just in case though but she has kept it down and wasn't sick anymore overnight. We've just finished a lovely big cooked brekfast and Penny was literally drooling over it as she usually gets a bit of sausage or bacon and sometimes a toast crust, but strictly no people food today, just to be on the safe side. She wasn't impressed!!
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! I love their faces when they try and stare you out over breakfast, lunch or dinner having just yacked up all over the place it doesn't occur to them they're on short, bland rations for a while : ;D
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Tell you what though.... Kinda glad it happened here and not at home... All that sick... I have carpet at home. What a nightmare!!

Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Glad to hear Penny is feeling better Enjoy the rest of your holiday x
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Good to hear this Lauren. I feel really sorry for her missing out on her cooked breakfast though I guess there's always tomorrow.
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Well we've just arrived back from holiday. It was a lovely few days away but we did have some dog related mishaps!! There was this one of her being rather violently sick the first night. The second night (Tuesday night) we shut her in her crate and headed off to the bar for some food and drinks. Arrived back at the chalet almost four hours later.... And Penny is sitting in the window waiting for us to come back! I must have not fastened the crate properly and somehow she pried the door open!! Wednesday.... No mishaps actually. Had quite a nice day and Penny rode on a steam train!! Thursday we spent the day on the beach. The weather was beautiful and it was pretty hot so we sat by some shade for Penny, but would she lie in it? No. Had a lovely swim in the sea, with Penny which was great. Then as we were packing up to leave the beach.... Whoosh! A literal explosion of diarrhoea from Penny I have never seen anything like it! It was like someone had turned a high power tap on!!! Poor girl I think she must have managed to swallow a fair amount of sea water whilst swimming and playing in the sea. Friday - home time!! Got 15minutes out of Brixham and we hit traffic. They're building a new road and the traffic is really heavy. I can hear Penny panting in the boot, something that never happens so I made OH pull over to go check on her and she's roasting so I spent the 3 hour drive home with her curled up in the footwell of the passenger seat with the air con blasting!!! Which raises a question for me, something I've actually wondered a while. How do you keep dogs cool while travelling?? You can't have windows open travelling 70mph (or more lol) on the motorway... And the air conditioning only really cools the front of the car as there's no blowers in the back/boot. So how do you do it? I know you can buy thermometers and stuff to measure the temps but what's the point in knowing how hot it is if you can't do anything about it? I want to get one of those window shades (like you get for kids) to stick in the boot window as I'm sure it will help a little, but probably not much, right? What do you all do?
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Glad that your holiday went OK (ish). We have the same problem travelling with Holly. I try to cool the car, keep the windows open a bit for her, turn the air on on cool, and stop every hour or so to see if she needs water. I'd be equally interested to know what others do to keep their dogs cool.
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! I try and get the whole car cool with windows and AC but I also try and travel at cooler times of the day if it's that hot which also fits in with traveling while Lizzie is asleep as she's not exactly patient although she looooooooooves lorries.....and singing.....maybe it's for my sanity thinking about it.....
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! If it's really bad we put Poppy on the back seat of the car, rather than have her roast in the boot.
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Just wondering why you can't have windows open at 70 mph ? Obviously not all the way down but if you have both back windows open a few inches you should get a good draft. Not much in a traffic jam though. I have those window shade things that you get for children. They do help as they keep any direct sun off.
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Bought a car with aircon vents in the boot. Plus have just ordered baby sun blinds for side windows of boot. Was a major factor in choice of car.

[/quote] We've tried it and it makes a weird noise, probably something to do with how the air circulates. Usually we travel early in the morning but today was particularly hot and we weren't able to leave until 10 so travelling times aren't always flexible. It's definitely going to be a consideration in the next car we get but that won't be for a few years or until we have kids (whichever comes first) but for now we have to make the best with what we have (ford focus)
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! Is she in a crate at all, if so you could drop the back seats which might let the cool air from the aircon circulate through to the back?..... just a thought. My next car will have zoned air con in the very back but we're a while off that too
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! I like the idea of dropping the back seats and sliding the crate forward, good idea Barbara I have got blinds from Amazon, sold as a pair but haven't tried them out yet. Welcome home! The beach sounded great, swimming together must have been a blast, shame about the squits
Re: Penny being sick on holiday! I like the idea of having her on the back seat, and it would work for day trips but probably not holidays as this last week proved - the back of the car was packed full of out stuff and we even had to put a bag in the boot with Penny!! No, she's not in a crate, she's just in the boot with a dog guard and she will just lie down and go to sleep as soon as the engine starts, she's really good travelling. I'm not sure the back seats fold flat enough to put a crate in like that.
