Glad it all went well for you girls. I knew it would.

Did they close the wound with stitches or glue? My vet used glue and they didn't even send her home with a collar. She took absolutely no notice of the wound what so ever.

Your biggest problem is now going to be the "keep her quiet bit".

Just thought I'd mention it, it takes ages for the hair where they have been shaved to grow back, two months on we still call her "Baldy Belly".

She still seems to have lots of hair left to drop everywhere

Yeah Penny's got glue. The wounds have some crusty bits around them which is normal as everything dries out and heal etc. I want to give it a wipe and clean it up but it's still early days and I don't want to risk opening up the wounds.

Oh dear I forgot about Murphy as well. Sorry Murphy. Good to see the pair of you especially you Murphy with your boxers on and you Penny with your collar. They soon bounce back, don't they? I had to keep meg on lead for 2 weeks after she was spayed. Are you having to? It's what our vet advised. I know I cried when I left meg to be done, her little face watching me leave.

Pleased Penny is recovering well. I imagine she'll be back to normal more quickly with a less invasive op.

They didn't actually say anything about exercise so it's lucky I know how to take care of a bitch that's just been speyed!!!

She's not had a walk yet but I will take her for a ten minute on lead walk tonight as otherwise she'll be going stir crazy if she doesn't get out! I'll keep her on lead for at least a week and see how I feel she's getting on. We have our post op check on Monday evening.

So for those of you who are interested here is a pic of Penny's wounds. They're a bit scabby and crusty but look healthy. I'm going to give them a gentle bathe tomorrow - didn't want to disturb them too much today as they're still fresh.

You can see there's one either side of her 'belly button' and then another to the left. I thought there would only be two but I think they cut the ovaries and then removed them through a seperate hole, at least that's the impression I got when the nurse was talking me through the procedure.
She's had a little lick at them today, I let her have one or two then stopped her. I want her to keep the area clean but not lick it too much to re open the wounds obviously.

I was surprised they're as big as they are to be honest, I thought they'd be smaller.

She's totally back to normal today. Would have been charging round the garden all afternoon if we didn't stop her. I didn't end up walking her today as it was just too hot and she was quite content lying on a duvet in the shade whilst I basked in the sun lol

Bless her :) it was hot today wasn't it :) I bet Penny is missing her walks :(
I didn't walk Harley til 9.15pm. She is getting more lively and starting to need longer walks again.....very sniffy the past 2 days.....very small amount of blood today so hopefully not long now ::)

Wow I've never had a female dog, so never had to go through this, but I was surprised at the small wounds. What a wonderful option to be able to have this done in a much less invasive way! Glad to hear Penny is recovering well!

They look very clean and neat wounds.

Do you still have to be as careful with exercise, jumping up etc as you would with a normal op wound ?

The daftest thing just went through my head. I thought I wonder if dogs can be neutered using key hole. ::)Duh :p

Well I guess for the males they would do a vasectomy but I've not ever met a male dog that's had it done so it's obviously not the most common choice.

They actually didn't say anything about exercise. They told me not to allow her to jump up and that she should be lifted on and off the sofa, car etc. I'm going to start with ten minute on lead walks only and just play it by ear really, but I won't be letting her off lead for at least a week.

When my bitches were spayed, they had one tiny wound, about the size of one of Penny's. Interesting to see what keyhole surgery looks like. I imagine that they haven't restricted the exercise because it is keyhole?

I must admit I have been wondering about the whole restricted exercise issue.
I you were a human having a laparoscopic (keyhole) cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) for instance, the advice is still that it is a major operation, the same thing is happening inside your body as in an "open" procedure, there is just less to be seen on the outside. For some people the recovery time can be almost as long.
I would have thought the same restricted activity advice as for a normal spay might have been appropriate.
I am kind of curious about that.....

I wonder though, because she's only had the ovaries removed and not the womb as well it's a less traumatic operation? I've been reading up on how they actually do it and that's the impression that I get.

It's strange; I'm always worrying about her wounds on her abdomen, and forget about what she must have inside!

Ah...I guess that would make sense Lauren.
    Just checking on that.
Found a useful link here to a random veterinary surgery information site (just came up on google)
They advise a week of on lead walks and also mention the internal healing issue I was concerned about.
