Hi. Was wondering if anyone knows anything about the perfect puppy training collar. I’ve seen it advertised over and over on tv. Supposedly great reviews with money back guarantee. Any opinions? Thanks jeff s
Not sure what this is but training collars don't sound good. I would look at loose lead walking on the training page of this website if you have any issues. Willow pulls now and again but I train her every walk.
Hi @jeff s, Unfortunately training collars emit a shock to the dog and this flies in the face of the philosophy of positive, force free training advocated on this forum. It is far better, and absolutely possible, to train your dog using encouragement, treats and practice. There’s bundles of information on this site to help you train your dog to do whatever you need.
I think, by "training collar", you mean ecollar - since this is what force-based trainers call ecollars? Please reconsider your choice of equipment and your approach to training your dog, if you do mean an ecollar. (If you don't, my apologies.) I would recommend you read 'The Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson as a great intro to the subject. As far as puppies and collars go, for walking on leash away from the house, I would recommend a harness over a collar: https://dogmantics.com/is-it-harmful-to-attach-a-leash-to-your-dogs-neck-2/ But I do use a collar on my young puppies around the house. This is because they are trailing a puppy house line attached to that collar (with no pressure on the other end of it 99% of the time) so I can grab them and distract them from things and quickly take them outdoors to the toilet. When the pup no longer needs that constant supervision, they lose the collar and tag line and we just use a harness away from the house.
As you've seen so far, dog shock collars are very controversial and not at all recommended on this forum. In fact, several countries have now banned their use entirely. I have and still use a front clipping harness as Willow walks nice but does still pull if she sees other dogs so it's handy for in public places as I have more control as she doesnt pull when she has the harness on. I have 2 as she rolls in something nasty so there is always a clean one to use.
