i think my little fella is just developing his personality he is a soft, sensitive, very pleasing, he is a bit nervy of traffic, sometimes i think he is like an old man, .......he is turning out just the way i wanted him to i am so happy
Re: personality Lovely post to read Lynne Re the traffic , do you have a not too busy road where maybe you could walk Jasper , just to help him to overcome the nerves ? I used to sit on a bench at the corner of our lane , not major busy but tractors and trailers , just to help Sam be used to them . I think you have a little star in Jasper
Re: personality i do take him to some quiet streets.....he pulls me when he hears a car coming.....i am so scared that he will slip out of his collar to get away from the traffic, i may sit at my front door holding him at the side of me to reassure him, i have traffic going past my house.... yesterday i was very tired, went back to bed unusual for me, ......invited jasper to come up with me, little love lay at the side of me,.......he is growing up so fast
Re: personality Thats a good idea Lynne , just a case of desensitising him . When you see a car coming , distract him with a treat, getting him to concentrate on you rather than the enemy What happens is that they react to a car coming towards them , then the car goes , job done, sorted , so they think that this is the way to deal with it , react and it will disappear . What Jasper needs to know is that there is nothing to fear , try and be relaxed yourself as well because they do pick up if we are anxious so, nice calm voice and reassurring noises plus the distraction of a treat so that he isnt looking at the car, but at you . It does work Lynne but like all other aspects of dog training, just needs to be repeated over and over, you will get there
Re: personality thank you kate, you always give me wonderful advice, i will repeat again without this forum i would not of been able to cope, ......you can read as many books and research as much as you can,......its much nicer to get advice from a person who has experienced the same problems thank you so much to everyone that gives me advice its much appreciated
Re: personality Isn't it really lovely when they kinda meld with you! Lady was also very nervous with traffic when she was younger. What Kate suggested really does work, but it takes a bit of time. Lady is ok with cars and vans up to Transit size now. She's still not keen on killer lorries and busses. I think it's the noise they make more than anything.
Re: personality My mum's border collie was a nightmare with traffic. After a lot of treats as Kate advises, she is now fine and can be walked alongside a busy road on a lead with no problems. You'll get there.
Re: personality got to do are training soon on exercise 2 new room recall......will do a bit of that let him rest then sit out as for traveling in the car he loves it,
