Hi all This is such a lovely site!! Everyone is so friendly and I am looking forward to talking to everyone and getting some good advice ;D We have been on the waiting list with a labrador breeder for a few months and the other week they contacted us to say that they have had a litter of which we can have puppy. We want to have a yellow boy and they have a few yellow boys available. We have not seen them yet as they do not let people visit until they are five weeks old ( which they are this weekend) so I am going to contact them to arrange a visit soon. We are going on holiday end of September so they have happily agreed to keep our pup a bit longer so he will be 12 weeks old when we collect him. They are getting his first two injections done for us and getting him microchipped. Has anyone else got their pup at this older age and experienced any problems? I am aware most people get their pups at 8 weeks old. THanks Jen
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Oh what lovely news Jen and how exciting for you Its great that the breeder is getting both lots of vaccinations done, plus the microchip too , this means that you will be able to get your puppy out and about pretty much straight away . Because of this , I cant see any real problems with getting your puppy at this age , but would advise tou to get him out into the big wide world as soon as you can . He will be that little bit more mature but also may miss his family a little more than a puppy who leaves home at 8 or 9 weeks . Could you give the breeder an item of clothing of yours, unwashed , so that it carries your scent and then he can get used to it, just for a week or so before you collect him , dont forget to come back and tell us all about him
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Hi Jen! Welcome to the forum - we haven't scared you off then? ;D We similarly got Lilly home when she was almost 12 weeks due to holiday committments. She is now 3 years old (a black girl) and pretty laid back. Her bad points are her recall - if there is anything at ALL interesting to chase - and I suppose her lack of desire to retrieve. I'm not sure I would blame either of them on picking her up a bit later, rather a lack of knowledge on our part generally. I suppose perhaps the recall MIGHT be implicated in that we didn't have the early-ish imprinting period, but I'm pretty sure if we had known how to do it from the early stages it would have helped. Our breeder arranged for her first jag, and then when we went for our second our vet used a different brand, so we had to get two of HIS type - that delayed our early walks and socialisation. It didn't even occur to me that I could take her out in my arms or a small bag. She was a breeze to housetrain though as she was that little bit older. How exciting for you! We love new puppies on the forum! Hope you enjoy your wee boy, and being on here. I expect you have read all Pippa's puppy stuff on the main site. Jac
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks How exciting! Welcome from me, Julie, and Charlie 6 month choc boy.
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Thank you and no definitely not scared off I am so, so excited - even more so than our 6 yr old. I know our 10 month old will love him as she loves dogs. I will be the one doing the majority of the training as I am home, and I cannot wait!! I will be looking into "puppy parties" and basic obedience classes as I think that would be good for him and me! What do you think? Our son's school is a short walk away and with all the children, cars and other dogs that are around the school I thought this would be good for his socialisation from the very start too! We also live on the edge of Dartmoor so can get him used to seeing sheep, ponies and cows! I had thought about speaking to the breeder about leaving an item of clothing with them with our scent on - I definitely will now thank you. The one thing we are struggling on is deciding on a name! I would quite like to have one ready so the breeders can start calling him by his name before we get him so he is used to it - does that seem like a good idea? The few that we like so far are: Dexter Harley Blue Enzo Jasper Harvey Its oh so hard to chose!! Jen
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks A toughie... I would choose the pup then decide on the name. Just thinking of my son......we were sure he was going to be an Andrew, then once he was born he had to be a Scott!! ;D ;D
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Hi Jen, a very warm welcome from me Helen, Hattie 6 years and Charlie 2 1/2 years. Wonderful another puppy If it's any help we collected Hattie when she was 13 weeks and this was because the breeder would not let her pups go before 12 weeks. It didn't make a jot of difference to her training and she is an absolute sweetie. As for names, well I am the opposite to Jac, we had all our childrens (4 ) names picked before they entered the world. I love your choices, I like Harvey but that's just me. Helen x
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Sorry Jen , I totally forgot to say a warm welcome to the forum from me , two year old black Lab boy Sam and also Millie, age and " breed " uncertain ( rescue ) but crossed with a mop ;D
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks We really like Harvey too but it's my maiden name does that make it a bit weird? lol We also had our two kids names chosen before they were born and luckily they suited the ones we had chosen
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Dexter says Hi and thanks for putting his name top of your list ;D And if you call your pup Dexter that would make 3 yellow boys called Dexter on here.We live abroad so we got him at 5 months when he was allowed to be imported...I'm short on time tonight so ill just say a quick hi for now and welcome to the forum Best wishes Angela
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Welcome from Poppy and me... My old boy Bones was 12 weeks old when we got him, and the previous dog Billy was 16 weeks! They both came to me house trained, and with no socialization problems that I could see. We got our current dog, Poppy, when she was 8 weeks old, and while she was perhaps a little more excitable than the other two, I wouldnt say there was a huge difference... Good luck, both with your new puppy an finding the right name for him!
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Exiting news on getting a new puppy. Our puppy who we only got 2 weeks ago was 9 weeks old when we got her, my friend got one of her labs at 12 weeks old with no complications and i think the other one was 8 weeks old, no real difference in them at all
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Welcome to the forum from me and Obi (Oberon). How exciting to be getting a new puppy You are all going to have great fun with your pup,
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Hi there and welcome from Lisa and Simba (chocolate labX)... How exciting for you all! I love all your name choices but for some reason Blue sticks out for me...good luck on the choice!
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Forgot to say ive sponsored a black puppy guide dog called Harley!there you go 2 names attached to me on the list he he he !
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Thanks everyone! I am glad to hear that no one who got their pup at 12 weeks has had any problems! That is a massive weight off my mind! We are thinking that Harvey is the name to go for I am going to be making a list soon to make sure I have all the stuff ready for him. Counting down the days eeek Jen x
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks In fact can anyone advise on anything that they think we may need - as you own labs already you may come up with things that aren't on the generic lists but you have found to be amazing! So far we have bought: Crate Bedding Bowls x 2 Lead and collar Toys (I seem to be collecting these - soon he will have as many as the kids!) I have yet to get him: Food (Royal Canin Lab Junior is advised by breeder) Treats for training Towel Name tag Brushes (there are so any types!) Thats all I can think of off the top of my head Thanks .. Jen
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks Welcome from Riley and I too....so many puppies arriving at the moment, I'm very jealous I think if you're away it's very sensible to leave him in an environment he knows, we tried to do that but it would have added almost 6 weeks on to pick up date. Riley's breeders were just breeding a litter to keep one and they didn't want to hang on to him for that much longer. Luckily Ben's parents came and house/puppy sat for us.
Re: Pick up our yellow pup in 7 weeks All pups are different, but the things I rushed to buy/find despite extensive preparations were: Small puppy kongs, and something to fill them with (the commercial paste looks dubious IMHO) A water bowl he couldn't tip up - ended up with a cast iron cook pot The Royal Canin Lab Junior - no one held it in stock, spend a morning driving round, had to order it on line A bottle of specialist cleaning fluid to get pee out of carpets A stack of towels for muddy paws and general mopping up A good puppy care book A soft foldable travel crate for the car A harness instead of a collar This forum! Your list may be very different, but that was mine. Best of luck, keep us posted!
