As Julie says Harness, and puppy book come out every time we have a new addition. Plenty of towels. You could take a towel and leave with the litter when you visit. Then it has a familiar scent for pup when you pick him up for coming home.
Make sure you know the exact variety of dog food, to make sure it's stocked locally, or you may need a few days to get it delivered from online.

Ohh exciting, another pup on the way.

Oh, batteries for the digital camera to, we'll be needing plenty of pics pleeaaassee. :)

Oh thank you that is really useful!! I had not even thought of a harness. Is this because they pull so much as puppies? They are currently fed the Royal Canin Lab Junior and my local pet shop, garden centre and petsathome sell it - luckily! I will have a look at harnesses now and also soft crates for the car. I did wonder what the best way to travel in the car would be. We have an Ford Focus Estate so the boot is roomy - don't want him flying about back there!! :-\ I have a towel with a big hole in it so I going to appoint that "Dog Towel" and take it with us when we visit next, then they can make it smell all like mum and siblings.
The next 6 weeks (or 5 weeks and 5 days if I am being exact haha) is going to go slow. Although last two weeks of that we are on holiday so that bit should go but nice and quick ;D

Hi there,I'm Angela with Dexter,11 months yellow boy .

You sound very prepared and the waiting makes you glum but you will cheer up when your pup arrives ;D

Put Pippas Total Recall on your list....invaluable

Also read and read and read about heel work and walking before you go near a harness or lead......I speak from experience of doing it all wrong....there is a pull in them all I think from the kind comments I've had when I'm feeling a bit down about it .....so it's really important to do it right to prevent it becoming a problem
.....we are getting there but I'd hate you to go through the tussles and tears :'(quite literally that ive had !

    Hi Jen,

Welcome from myself & Charlie (9 weeks)

The wait is painful Jen, ask these guys what i was like but it does come round soon enough & before you know it the day is upon you.

I spent hours on the internet searching for things for Charlie. Reading about what to do & when. How to deal with things, pet insurance, jabs...the list is endless.

But hooray for this forum, which will become your second home ;D ;D Here you can find all the answers you need with the help of everyone. They're not a bad bunch really ;)

The one thing I can help you with is shopping...puppy retail therapy is amazing...just watch your purse it's addictive ;D ;D Good Luck & I hope the time flies for you

    ;D ;D ;D

I have just ordered Total Recall. It has some fantastic reviews. This, in particular, is something we really want to get right!! We want him to come back when we call. I do not want to be chasing him about the park or having him dashing off and ignoring me completely!! I am going to be very much into the training aspect of getting a puppy. We want him to be well rounded, confident and odedient so we have a happy dog and happy us! ;D I have just made a list of tips from the labrador website on socialisation as the socialisation window closes so quickly!! Looks like we will be going out - a lot! Better strengthen up the back muscles so I can use the baby carrier ha! Although I need him to be able to walk with the buggy so that may have to be practiced in the garden without the baby for a bit haha! Heel work is definitely something I am going to have to get down to a fine art in that case!

    So excited!!

Does anyone on here show, work or take their labs to agility or obedience classes/shows/competitons?

    Jen

    Very excited for you!

Lots of people on here do all sorts of interesting things with their dogs - some work, like Heidrun's dogs - they and she are amazing, others like Obi - Rachael's dog - does obedience and flyball. Lots of different things. There are lots of videos and pictures posted. We had some of dock dogs a while ago.

I'm still at the basic obedience and learning to swim stage with 6 month old Charlie, but hope to do more stuff in the future. I think finding good classes, or a good club is a big help - I'm still looking, as haven't found anything suitable after puppy school. Hope I will soon though.

I take Poppy to gun dog classes - not that we're planning to take her shooting (although you never know!), but she is an absolute retrieverholic, so it just seemed the natural thing to do with her. She loves it! My old dog Bones was a very different, much more laid-back character - he was a Pet Therapy dog, and visited old people at a retirement home. I am a great believer in finding out what your dog likes to do, and then playing to that strength. At any rate, there is a lot of joy in working together with your dog, for both you and the dog! :)

    We like agility.
Sophie started it in the back garden using........Cricket stumps and long garden canes for weave poles, various plant pots and garden toys with more canes for jumps, a hula hoop, a childs play tunnel, a plank with something as a pivot..........probably more, cant remember.
I'm sure there is stuff on YouTube if you google "make your own weave poles" and such like.
    ;)

Karen, I could not agree more!! I would love to do something with our dog that he really enjoys as well as me.
Oh my, Dubai - that is a long way away! What a pain there is nothing local to you.
Julie T - I am researching good classes. I think there is one club locally I may contact. Also Pets at Home do puppy socialisation classes so I think I will look into that too!
DRjs@5 - I have thought about agility but after seeing how fast Border Collies go I have been scared off it haha!

We just got back home and I was looking at his crate with all the bits I have collected so far and got some massive broody puppy pangs haha!! I am so glad that I found this forum so I will be able to gush about my love for our dog and not be ridiculed for it! My best friend is not a dog person - got two cats! - and doesn't understand my desire to to be out in all weathers walking and playing with our pup/dog! I cannot wait!

Do most of you live in the UK? Be interested to know if anyone is local to me. I live in Devon .... :)

We are usually in London (where we have to be super polite in the parks and not chase ducks) but are currently letting our hair down a bit in Cornwall (but not chasing seagulls on the basis we've got to go back to London and be all polite again soon - but not too soon ;D).

I live in Australia. But I've been to Devon a few times and absolutely love it :)

How much fun would it be to all meet up with our dogs somewhere? ;D Alas, a few of us would have to be content to Skype :)

Oh wow some of you live so far away in such wonderful places!! I think we should come and visit you guys instead haha!

Oh what a week it has been! My son was taken into hospital last week and we spent five days in there!! It was horrible but he is now home and much better and attempting school. Do not want to have to go through that again in a hurry!

I managed to get a copy of Total Recall which I was reading during the quiet times at hospital! It is sooooo good! I now need to get me an Acme gun dog whistle :)

I`m in Cornwall, so not that far away depending on what part of Devon you live in :)
I consider myself to be very lucky, five mins from the moors and woodlands with rivers and just over ten mins to a dog friendly beach, dog paradise :)
