You have all inspired me to move Charlie's training on and my main goal is the STOP whistle, so this morning I put a mat on the floor got my clicker and treats and I had a really good result. Within a couple of minutes Charlie was on command going to "place" and then without me asking he sat focused on me Every time he arrived at the mat I C&T and threw the treat away from him, I hope this is correct ??? I am really hoping this will eventually help with his stop whistle as I feel this is very important for us. I will in time move from room to room and then the yard etc. Is there anything else I should be doing apart from getting David to make me a place board? : Thanks xx
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Watching this carefully Helen thankyou x I don't know enough to offer any advice but great you've got a new goal for you and Charlie and he sounds really keen and responsive. Stop whistle is top of my list too although we did get sidetracked yesterday and today having fun on his see saw ;D In my head place boards and casting are being saved for Summer ( something new and different I can do with Dex in the house) so I'll watch your progress with interest .In the meantime I'm back to stop whistle basics .....Julie referenced Heidrun's advice earlier so I'm going to look that up and capitalize on Dex's love for his rabbit dummy ;D Good luck xxx
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Sounds a really good start Helen. Sorry You know how rubbish I am and can't do links. If you go on the Gundog board and look at my thread about Making Steady Exciting Barbara has put a link to a you tube video about place board training. I've not been able to watch it all, my you tube went dodgey, but I think you might find it useful.
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Angela, how did you get Dexter interested in the rabbit skin dummy without murdering it? and could you please link Heidrun's advice? Thanks. I'm hoping come summer we will have progressed into the garden with a very good stop on a place board at a distance - hmm we'll see : What I really need to know is saying "place" correct or should it maybe be "back"? :-\ Does anyone know please? xxx Thank you xxx
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Helen,I think Julie maybe meant this ......see if it helps http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=2095.msg18378#msg18378 Also the rabbit skin dummy works on a knife edge.....12 months ago,I gave it to him to see what he would do....he went nuts .....the dummy still bears the scars so it got put away .....now he is more reverent...... ;D I just brought it out a couple of months ago and it didn't fry his brain as much. we use it mainly for our 'find it's' I drop it when he's not looking as we are walking along and he will hunt it out and return every time..... But I also probably misuse it :-\ if he's looking interested in something on the horizon or has failed a recall because he's found something smelly/disgusting /interesting I say 'what have I got ' and rummage in my backpack to get it and he comes flying back instantly ....he gets a throw or maybe 2 then ......if I don't gauge it right though and give him too much he will lie down to chew on it ..... This reminds me I must order a couple more!
Re: Place Board well Place Mat I'm following this too, this is something I would like Simba to learn, well, two something's - stop whistle and placeboard. First off is getting a placeboard....
Re: Place Board well Place Mat I like placeboards, very much. With an older dog though (Charlie is considered a "older dog" at training) it took a while to get "on the board" so deeply embedded for the boards to be really useful in training. A young puppy was doing it at the same time as us, and was much faster. It then took a long time to get distance in the boards, and I still have more distance in my stop than my placeboards that is, I can stop Charlie further away than I can send him to a placeboard. Placeboards are still good value because they have helped with sit/wait, steadiness, and casting. But it's been a lot of work, nearly 6 months to get the placeboards strong enough to use properly. I haven't trained everyday though, as I've had lots of other things to do.
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Charlie is doing very well with hs place (mat) board training after less than a week, I can send him to the mat with me out of sight and he sits waiting for me to return. I have been using the stop whistle too and this is going really well. Can I recall him out of sight from the mat? I don't want him to get board so any ideas about how I should progress please? Thanks x
Re: Place Board well Place Mat I wouldn't recall him off the board if you are training stop whistle first, I'd deliver the reward on the board or behind or to the side of the board (if you use a ball). So you have taught the action of going to the board, turning round and facing the handler, and not moving until given a release or another command. And associated your stop whistle with that action (which should happen cued by the place board). Then increase distance, then take the place board out to several different locations to proof that...then add distractions slowly, moving items etc. etc. Then fade out the board.
Re: Place Board well Place Mat OK no recalling. I do deliver the treat to him on the board but I could start using a tennis ball as a reward also
So you have taught the action of going to the board, turning round and facing the handler, and not moving until given a release or another command. Re: Place Board well Place Mat I like tennis balls as a reward for placeboard work, it works fantastically well for Charlie. I have a ball on a string which is his "reward ball" and I throw it for him after the click. He usually brings it back, but he doesn't have to, it's his reward to do with what he wants. This was after I spent hours feeding on the board though - you want the dog to think that sitting on that placeboard is the best thing ever. Yes, you need to be able to have him repeat the action you want - in your case stop, turn, sit, look at you, wait for the next cue - everywhere. So in the house, in all locations relative to you, in the garden, in a quiet field, in a lane...everywhere. Then, increase distance - if you want the placeboards to help you with stop at a distance, you need considerable distance in your placeboards. You won't be able to do this in the house, obviously, you'll need a large, scent and other dog free space (I used a rugby field) at first, which was amazing because it had lines marked in 20m sections so I could see exactly what distance I had. Then, distractions....
I am so pleased that he does this so well and won't budge until I release him I will do a lot of work in the house first as I am still waiting for the fence man to replace our fence : so can't use the quiet part of the garden for a while yet. I am lucky that I do have a long room that I can use which will give me a good 15 ish meters to practise until we move outside, but don't think I will have a dog free space to use unless I can use the paddock again but there would be distractions as it has a public footpath running through it :-\ Anyway that's not for a while yet so I will think about what I can use in the meantime.
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Sympathies finding suitable spaces outside. I was tearing my hair out in London. A Jack Russell peed on my placeboard one evening. :-\ Then, I found a rugby field (I contribute a few pounds to the club kitty, and Charlie picks up the empty sports drink bottles after matches). It's been a godsend....
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Damn JR ;D Yes it's going to be difficult as most paddocks etc. have livestock in them, the park is a no dogs off lead. You would think it would be easier in the country but not so However, I think my problem will be about Charlie focusing outside and not wanting to run hopefully he will think his placeboard is a great place to be where lots of lovely things happen, we'll see :
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Hmm weird :-\ I have just been doing some training with Charlie, he goes to his mat perfectly with "place" and I blow the STOP whistle - perfect I release him with "OK" now sometimes he walks around but yesterday and today he sometimes just stays sat on the mat staring at me. I moved to another room on Monday but he has been fine, am I doing something wrong? ??? Thanks
Re: Place Board well Place Mat Oh no I'm not just the stop on the mat. Should I throw the treat away from him to get him off the mat? Thanks Julie
