Oh, sorry, forgot a bit - I used to step forward and rotate to face the dog to preserve the sitting straight on the board (if you are still working on that), then step back into position as he returned.

Thanks Julie, Chalie doesn't go to the mat without a command yet should I be working on that or keep going as I am for longer? Is the "right" and "left" just for gun dog training?

Charlie does a great sitting straight on the mat without any training, not sure why but he does :)

I'm not using the clicker now just verbal comand and just use "ok" to release him and he always sits infront of me after release, gosh hope I've been doing this right ???

I'm sure you've just been doing it differently, not wrong. I don't know how to do it without a clicker.

We shaped go on the board with a clicker - until we got to the point where just the presence of the board was the cue for the dog to go on it (we had no cues at this point). When the dog was going on the board, released by the click, and coming back to us for a treat - and that behaviour was fluent - we added the cue. I did the same for left and right. Then I stopped rewarding going on the board without a cue.

I have been practising place mat indoors for a while now, moving to different rooms and moving the mat to different locations within each room, all going great and his long sit/stay on the mat is good and his release cue is also good. As the weather is so nice I decided to move out into our courtyard and Charlie was brilliant just as indoors. We also did playing with the rabbit skin tug toy as a reward twice, interestingly I dragged it along the ground moving in all different directions which he enjoyed but also he bagan to sit and wait for me to say "get it" before chasing it again which I didn't ask him to do, is that OK? :-\

When can I start to introduce the "stop" whistle or should I?

We also did a little off lead heel work with quick change of direction and I added a 'touch' cue, I asked for a sit/stay whilst I walked away, recalled him and asked for a touch and he did really well :) We will stick with this for a while and try to move into the garden and lets hope my neighbours darn cat hasn't been using our garden as a rat run!! :( Thanks xx
