Could anyone please give me any info on tips to stop a young lab bitch who has a habit of eating other dog's poo! I have tried everything to stop her. I do not really want to go down the route of a muzzle as she is such a friendly girl and loves to interact with other dogs. I have too watch her at all times and it is sending me potty! Love my walks with my dogs but this is ruining my walks as to make matters worse she has IBS which doesn't help! I would be most grateful for any solutions to this problem as she regularly has me up a t night with an upset tummy!
Hi there, this is a really common problem so you are not alone. Have you read the guide on the main site: Why Dogs Eat Poop and What You Can Do About It. Just as an aside, I wouldn't assume that the poop eating is what is upsetting your dog's tummy (though it could be) as most poop eating dogs suffer no consequences at all. I hope you find that article helpful
Both my labs have been poo eaters. It was suggested on here it might be his kibble diet but I switched to raw recently for other reasons and it has made no difference. Interesting that the article above mentions neutering. With Toby it definitely wasn’t a problem early on. He was neutered at 13 months so there may have been a connection I just can’t quite remember when it started(that’s an age thing!) All I can say is it became a real issue with my previous lab and I think that was down to how I dealt with it. It almost became a game and he would walk further away from me or lunge at a poo when on the lead before I spotted it first. With Toby I am more relaxed about it and he only does it occasionally and is quite selective. He is also much better on unfamiliar walks so I try to take him to lots of new places. It is horrible to think about it and worse I think if you have young children and a dog that licks. With my other lab I would bring him home and throw some kibble in his water bowl to encourage him to wash his mouth a bit(and then change the water!)
