Hi , my name is Gina. I have a 3 year old black labrador called Ozzy; he is a good boy apart from a few little things. He has always eaten his own poo on and off but when he is running over the park off lead, he has started to eat other dogs poo. How can I stop this it's so disgusting? Thanks for any help.

Hey Gina and welcome to the forum.

Disgusting to us, yes, but not to some dogs! Here's an article that may help you: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/why-dogs-eat-poop-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/

My dogs don't (yet) eat dog poo, but they do like other animals' deposits. I just let them get on with it. It's gross, yes, but it's not going to hurt them, I worm them regularly and you sometimes have to pick your battles. But if you're intent on stopping Ozzy, you'll have to work on your "leave it" and recall commands. Good luck, and we'd love to see picture of Ozzy! :)

Dogs are great, aren't they? Unfortunately what seems unimaginably repellant to us seems just fine and dandy to them... Have a read of this article on poo eating. It's not an easy problem to solve but training a good recall can help. The good thing is it's not harmful to your dog, but I'd be diligent about your worming regime.

    Welcome to the forum :)

I see that Snowbunny has posted the same link :)

Holly's a poo eater. We clear up immediately after she's done a poop. Fortunately she's very regular so we know when we need to follow her out with the shovel.

With other animals poo its a question of working on the "LEAVE" command, and being a bit vigilant. We never, for example, let her off lead in an area where there have just been cattle or sheep. Its just asking for trouble! We plan our routes to avoid those fields.

Gina - what a gorgeous pup!!

Zac (14 weeks) has not eaten his own - but recently grossed us all out by eating goose poop like it was a delicacy at the park! *gag*
