Belle is oldish (at least 12), and has been really slowing up since the new year really. On Monday she really went down hill, barely able to walk, falling over unable to get up. Last night she woke us up screaming, she did settle though. Fearing it was her time, I have cried all night and all morning. Went to the vets just now - joy of joys, Belle is still with us! Vet did thorough exam, and feels she may have a bulging disc. Also some dementia (she had a right funny turn at lunch time today - very anxious). We are trying metacam to see if she gets relief. Happy tears now.
Poor Belle. I hope the Metacam does the trick. When my old boy was 13 he suddenly had terrible arthritic pain and I thought we'd come to the end of the line, but Metacam gave huge relief - he started to walk happily again - though it did take about a week to have full effect. Thinking of you.
She's really perked up after one dose (or was she going to anyway?) - I'm so relieved. She's back barking at the milkman, and for once, I welcome it.
Oh dear. I've heard that scream, it's awful. Can you see a bulging disk on Xray? I hope the Metacam takes care of it. Really would have thought you'd need something stronger, lucky you don't.
She hasn't had an xray. We're just going one step at a time. She did have some bloods which unfortunately have shown kidney disease, the vet says we will probably have to swap metacam for tramadol. If the pain comes back I will consider the xray - I wasn't pushed into it (we're not insured ). Got to look at her diet now.
Sorry to read this! It is like it was with our Euan. I know the screams too well. I will never forget it. Euan already got a sort of metacam (carprodyl) with tramadol together and even that didn't help him with his pain. It is just 2 month ago, seems one week to me. I still miss him very much... Hope that the medication will soon help and that the kidney problems solves with the food!
I used Tramdol an Onsior for Douglas and it gave him 2 more years of happy pain free living. My physio said that this type of pain is often a problem with older dogs and can lead to incontinece not because they are loosing control of their bladder and bowels but because the pain stops them getting up fast enough. I recently passed this on to another dog owner who was very worried about her old boy. She got him some pain relief and he improved his tolieting straight away. I love old dogs and caring for them. I hope Belle continues to improve she sounds such a fun old girl
She is back to her old self at the moment - touch wood. OH said she was a bit wobbly this morning. I gave her her metacam after breakfast & she was fine. Barking at passers by again. Wagging her tail again. It's such a relief to see her happy.
So pleased to bear that the Metacam seems to be making a difference and Belle is back to enjoying life
