Re: Poorly Benson It is strange that Harley, Benson and Holly have all developed kennel cough at the same time. I can only think that they got it from one of the (many) dogs they met on the beach.
Re: Poorly Benson Trying to be positive here.... if they've had it, does it mean they're immune afterwards?
Re: Poorly Benson The information I've found online suggests that there are many strains, just like flu. I guess they're immune to the strain they've had, but that other mutated strains could infect them in future.
Re: Poorly Benson Ah. Oh well, no silver lining there then. Just get well soon, puppies... Rosie and Pongo
Re: Poorly Benson Yes, been to the vet...must admit felt a bit like a leper there....had to bring Benson in via the side door...he thought it was all great fun..specially the rabbits.. (real ones..) and of course the giant stuffed dog was still there..(we nipped out the front quickly to get him weighed) His eyes were just huge round circles of excitement! Loved the vet and demanded tummy rubs..until she slipped a thermometer up his bottom.. ;D ;D Came away with anti-biotics, and a fluffy toy.. But yes, he has kennel cough..and have been advised to keep him calm and quiet, no idea how on earth we are going to manage that! Also he is probably infectious for a week to 10 days so to keep him away from other dogs. The vet said there is an awful lot of kennel cough around, but he isn't affected too badly and should recover pretty quickly. A challenging couple of weeks ahead.... Re: Poorly Benson Poor Benson I hope he recovers quickly. Nellie is booked into see the vet tomorrow morning as she has developed a bad cough since Thursday. I'm pretty sure its Kennel cough. I tried to upload a video of her hacking but can't seem to upload it to flickr.
Re: Poorly Benson Good luck in keeping Benson calm I'm having a few nightmares with Harley over the past few days - she's in destroyer mode even though we are doing 3x30 mins walks min a day!! She's destroying all our mats and socks when she finds them. I'm doing lots of training, but not enough as she needs a good romp ;( I really hope Benson recovers quickly xx
Re: Poorly Benson Oh gosh, just reading this now, hope all the Kennel coughers get well soon....is it more prevalent a certain times of the year?

[/quote] I don't know the answer re: prevalance, our vet commented there was a lot around in our locali area, it is highly infectious so i guess like flu it travels in waves area to area. If i had known there was an outbreak we would have vaccinated again he was done very early as a pup. It is more of an inconvenience really, already bouncing of the walls i will have to take time of work just to manage him!
Re: Poorly Benson When Obi got it last year over half the dogs in his obedience class had it at the same time. It's extremely easy to catch if there is contact with an infectious dog. The hardest part is exercising your dog while avoiding contact with other dogs... A few times I had to dive off the track into the trees, which made oncoming walkers think I was an axe-wielding psychopath preparing an ambush. Most turned and hurried off in the opposite direction as fast as possible.
Re: Poorly Benson Poor Benson, and poor you, labradors do not do Quiet and Calm well! Theres been an outbreak in Edinburgh too, ripped round the local park like wildfire. My two were lucky to escape it I think, all their mates got it so a lot of owners shouting to keep away from afar!
Re: Poorly Benson Just saw this - wishing everyone a speedy recovery! My dogs have only suffered through kennel cough once, when the shelter lady brought Henry to the farm as a 6 month old. As soon as he got out of the car, he started coughing and I said, rather wildly, "Does he have kennel cough???" and she said, "No, no, he probably got some water up his nose when he got a bath this morning." Stupid me - the bath must have been at least 2 hours earlier and no water would still be in his nose! Within a few days, all three dogs were coughing, requiring a massive vet visit (through the back door, too!) and meds for all. I was not happy with the shelter, and they refused to reimburse me the costs of treating the illness they'd brought to my house! (They'd also mis-diagnosed the type of worms Henry had at the time, so were giving the wrong dewormer!) They did not get a good review from me...
Re: Poorly Benson Yes he is Karen, the vet thought it might be kennel cough, but not sure it was as his symptoms were so mild, I completely misremember that part of the conversation at the vets until hubby reminded me earlier! No cough today apart from early this morning, so hopefully he will recover quickly!
